Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams is one of my favorite artists. He was born in San Francisco in February of 1902. As a child, he had difficulties in school -- a problem which was partially remedied when his parents arranged for private tutors. A 1916 family trip to Yosemite National Park was to change his life -- his parents had given him his first camera before the trip. As a result of this, Adams developed two life-long passions; photography and nature. Adams was a commercial photographer for 30 years before starting the work he is most famous for -- his nature photography. Adams taught his first Yosemite photography workshop in 1940 with Edward Weston. He won three Gugenheim awards to photograph the National Parks (1944 -1958). He founded the f/64 group with Weston in 1932. He also developed the theory of zone exposure, and authored The Camera, The Negative, and The Print to explain his technique. A lifelong nature lover, Adams served on the board of directors of the Sierra Club for many years. Adams was an active teacher, artist and conservator until his death in 1984. Millions of men have lived to fight, build palaces and boundaries, shape destinies and societies; but the compelling force of all times has been the force of originality and creation profoundly affecting the roots of human spirit.

There is nothing worse than a brilliant image of a fuzzy concept.
Ansel Adams

(Art) is both the taking and giving of beauty; the turning out to the light the inner folds of the awareness of the spirit. It is the recreation on another plane of the realities of the world; the tragic and wonderful realities of earth and men, and of all the inter-relations of these.

Ansel Adams in a letter to Cedric White

There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.

I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.
