Ecological mapping can provide information about changes in species composition, with respect to indicator species.
Evaluating these relationships can be useful for preventing ecological damage before it occurs. For example, the increase or decrease of plants that are sensitive to grazing will indicate the approach of overgrazing before it becomes apparent in the grassland as a whole. Another example would be the use of plant and animal indicators to assess different kinds of water pollution.
Physiological indicators can provide information on the basis of visible damage; microscopic symptoms (cytological damage); physiological, biochemical, and chemical changes.
In general, site data and vegetation maps can provide information for land-use decisions by Government, industry and the general public. The information is used in decision making on habitat conservation and natural resource management.
