The Dog-Boy of Miami
On October 11, 1972, a group of people was sunbathing on a beach near Miami, Florida, when one of the group noticed a figure about two hundred yards down the beach in an unusual posture. The group ran down the beach to see what the strange-looking creature was. When they arrived at the spot, they saw to their amazement a boy about thirteen on all fours with his left, rear leg cocked up scratching his ear vigorously and emitting low groans.
Attempts were made to communicate with the boy to no avail. The boy only watched as the people talked and cocked his head to one side and then to the other, occasionally growling and barking.
The sunbathers decided to take him to a hospital for observation. On the way there, the boy insisted on sticking his head out the window as they drove.
After weeks of study, the hospital staff was unable to break through the language barrier and unable to paper-train the boy, so he was taken to a nearby animal shelter where he was put to sleep.
When news of the dog-boy was leaked to the press, letters and calls of outrage poured in from all over the world. No official word was issued from the hospital, but one of the staff members was quoted, "Well, the boy was about thirteen, and that's ninety-one in dog years, so he lead a long, happy life."
POSTSCRIPT
"I think that if the beast who sleeps in man could be held down by threats of any kind, whether of jail or retribution, then the highest emblem of humanity would be the lion tamer, not the prophet who sacrificed himself."
