It happened so quickly that no one involved is sure how it happened. The setting was Knoxville, Tennessee, in late summer of 1963. Arnold Long and his wife, Elizabeth, drove into town in midafternoon to buy the week's groceries. They were an average couple with their share of problems, but nothing that would have indicated what was about to happen.

When they entered the town, they parked their car in the Kroger parking lot and started to walk into the store. On the street adjacent to the parking lot, a Greyhound bus pulled up to the curb bearing a Chicago destination placard. Arnold spun on his heel and ran toward the bus. Elizabeth shouted, "What are you doing, Arnold?" But the cry fell on deaf ears. When Arnold boarded the bus, he turned and waved at his wife. The bus pulled away, and Arnold Long was never heard from again!
