My friend's dog is having kidney failure. The vet suspects poison, maybe antifreeze. She is skin and bones, has difficulty keeping her food down, though recently she has had 2 days where she kept food down for about 24 hours. She had 1 seizure 5 days ago but none since. She gained a pound in about 2 days. She is pretty weak but perks up when she goes outside and when she greets someone. The Vet, at first, recommended putting her down but when my friend balked he gave him bags of electrolites (IV) to hydrate her every day antacids and KD veterinary food. We have been giving her tiny amounts of food many times a day with antacids. Is there any hope for this dog? I would really appreciate any information. Tha

I found your site very interesting. It has been only a few weeks that I've know him to have glomerulopathy. He is so active and strong, it's hard for me to believe he is sick. I've started him on Prescription Diet's KD food, but plan on asking my vet a out the recipies I found on your site. Our yellow Lab of 10 years had never been sick a day in his life then suddenly began to drink large quantities of water and urinate large amounts. I found on this web site about Hills k/d have been feeding it to him for a week but he still has to go out bout every hour or two. He has been such a wonderful dog we will be so heartbroken for I am sure he will not last very long.

i am doing subq infusions w/ringers each nite...my main concern was what foods that are complete no-nos...this disease was such a complete surprise & came to lite only after having bladder stone surgery which was at that point life threatening too...his b n is off the chart but obviously i'm doing something rite because you'd never tell that he is sick because he is so lively etc....currently we are, besides the "infusions", are giving him amphojel, poly citra k, & b6 2 times a day & so far these remedies re "working", we do suspect that he will also need injections soon of eurythopoetin (sp?) since we are thinking that he is also developing anemia that is companion to end stage renal disease...plus he has the extra added attraction of pancreatitis....he a tually acts very healthy so i am very amazed at his resilience...since i just found your website & have not had time to read all of the articles, i want to find out the actual END STAGE to this & what are the first signs of the end & how long he has, i ne er want him to suffer ever....thanks for this comments section it has helped very much to type this all out....thanks again...gemineaux1

Our puppy Mia was diagnosed with JRF when she was spayed at 6 months. She had difficulty following her operation, but the diet she is on has seemed to calm things for her. We are very worried about how this will progress, what symptoms to look for and h w we will address her needs as her condition worsens. I've lost three dogs in five years. One Shih Tzu was 3 years old, another 5 months old, and most recently one who was just over a year. The last one came from a very reputable breeder who has not lost a puppy to this disease in over 20 years. It is ver heartbreaking and, after a while you don't know who to believe. We are, again, going to try getting another Shih Tzu. We will bringing him home about the middle of April. Puppies need protien to grow, yet I understand that too much protien can hurt th m. Vets all supply different answers, as well. Some folks feed their dogs raw food such as chicken, kidneys, liver, etc. All too high in protien. We've even had mutts who have health problems. I guess we just take our chances. It's just that these d gs become our family and it's hard to loose a member. Thanks for your website and for letting me vent. My best buddy, Butch, had a seizure this summer. The vet figures he may have been poisoned although could not detect what it was. At that point I was told that his kidneys were functioning at 50% capacity and that he could still live a normal life for man years. I took him back a few weeks ago (6 months later) for another BUN and creatine test - his kidneys are now down to 30% and they said that he may only have 1/2 a year to live although some dogs can turn around and live longer. He is eating Hills U/D ood now. I don't feel like I'm doing enough to help him get better. What else can I do, where can I go, who else can I talk to? I refuse to give up without a fight. Our dog stopped eating on Friday and was drinking massive amounts of water. He got very weak and just didn't seem right. We brought him to the vet on Monday and had him tested and he was diagnosed with kidney failure. The vet tried IV treatments, but w th no success. We decided to have him put to rest on Wednesday because of the amount of pain he was suffering. Pepper was diagnosed earlier this year with chronic renal failure we are currently treating her with fluid therapy and high blood pressure medication. She has lost too much weight because of a doctor impossed diet to lower her protein. Be very careful wh n putting your dog on a diet - our vet is now telling us it was a mistake and we should feed her whatever she wants. We have had success controlling her vomitting with prilosec (cuts the acid build-up in the stomach). Good luck to all!

My dog was great about going to the bathroom several times a day - - -knew that everytime I walked her - she would go - - -now - goes very seldom - - - don't know what is the cause -

My lab Banner has a really coarse coat. Its almost orange in color. The vet I'm currently taking him to thinks it may be a zinc defficency. Looking for some advice. This ia great site thank you and keep up the good work...

Thanks for your page...although we've been going thru this for the past year....Calvin seems to be going downhill quickly in the past week...I was trying to find some info on end stage kidney failure to try to gauge for myself how far he had progressed... y vet and I have decided he is dehydrated and are in the process of rehydrating him and finding foods he is interested in. We have been making a special whole grain/veggie/beef kidney diet for him for the past year and usually he scarfs it down..but this ast week....not so good. After reading most of your links I am realizing that his symptoms are mostly due to dehydration...Knowing that gives me more hope for his immediate future...I'm not ready to give up on my baby yet!! Having taken on this site, I kn w you understand my feelings!! If there is anything possible I can do to prolong an acceptable quality of life for him, I will...Thanks again for making this site available, Best of Luck, Meryl Markham :)

I have taken my dog to the vet several times and have not found any relief to her dry nose other than some ointment. She has no answer for her repeated cycles of throwing up. Now that I think I have the answer, I will take her to another vet and hopefull get some help! Thanks for the great recipes!

Our delightful mini Schnauser, Maggie, has beaten back many diseases, including bladder cancer. She is now diagnosed with kidney disease which hasn't progressed very far yet... she is being managed through diet by our vet at the moment by eating Hills K . Her first blood test is next week to determine how much calcium she's losing and at what rate. We are terrified of losing her, and our great vet who has worked with her sucessfully all her life, isn't sounding optimistic. I guess we're looking for so e comfort from people who have run in to this disease and any tips on what we can do to keep her with us. Thanks.

We were looking for someone with research of kidney failure. We just lost one dog last week to this and know we found out that her son has it too. We are interested in finding a program for him, so we can try to prolong his life. His mother was only fi e when we had to put her to sleep. Was referred by Sue and I have very fond memories of George, a magical dog who was smart and friendly and sort of "dog-about-town". She could even have been called a raconteur because of her wonderful expressiveness in spirit and action. My own beloved do died of cancer so I know what it means to have helpful information to make sure you can satisfy yourself that you have done everything possible to keep your dog as healthy as possible.
