Thoughts of Mine

Whenever I want to vent about the StarLights (or anything else), I write in here...enjoy these thoughts for what they are worth. (Or you can do like Yaten-yawn and fall asleep.)^_^

8/13/01- Those crazy uniforms of theirs…: Hehehe…. I know this is purely a matter of opinion, but I really like the Starlights’ sailor uniforms.^_^ First of all I thought it a refreshing change from the regular white outfits of the other senshi (pretty boring if all the senshi of the universe wore the same exact style…), not to mention that black is a very sophisticated color (IMO) and well suited to the mysterious aura that is such an integral part of the Starlights.

Of course, there are people out there who say these outfits make the Starlights look like they take on professions…other than sailor senshi. (Ahem…^^;;) And they give various reasons for this, the most obvious being the revealing state of the clothes, and the notion that those said clothes are made of leather. (Why do I say notion and not fact? I’ll explain next.^_^)

Well, in the Three’s defense, I have to say I don't think their outfits make them look like dominatrixes (what's the plural of this word?^^;) or prostitutes, simply because I don't believe they're wearing leather. The Starlights, as we all know, are alien senshi, hence their uniforms are also not of this world, quite literally. It's therefore strange to assume that the fabric of their clothes must necessarily be a material found on earth, ie-the leather everyone thinks they wear. It's my opinion that the Starlights' uniforms are made of a textile/material found on their world, Kinmoku, which is comfortable to wear and flexible--it's impractical for a senshi uniform to be otherwise. It's probably also waterproof, judging from how the rain seems to bounce right off them while they're walking to the Ginga TV building, after Princess Kakyuu's untimely death.^^ (Though that's probably the animators being lazy again...) And earthly leather, while it could be a few of those things, can't be all those qualities at the same time. (At least I don’t think…^_^;;) The idea that their clothes originated from Kinmoku could also explain the apparent impractibility of their extremely high heels--it most likely is nowhere near as uncomfortable as it looks, and is probably easy to move around in. The Starlights, after all, have no trouble performing extremely difficult kicks, jumps, and dodges wearing them.^_^

As for the revealing state of their clothes…I’m probably going to get yelled at for this…but I honestly don’t think the Starlights’ uniforms are any more revealing than some of the other outfits I’ve seen in Sailor Moon. I think it’s part of Takeuchi-sensei’s style, to draw, for lack of a better term, sexy (^_^) clothes on her characters: note Aluminum Siren, Red (or Lead) Crow, and the Amazon Quartet. For some reason the Starlights get it the worst with that ‘clothes are too revealing’ thing, and I’m not really sure why. (It’s the leather factor, I’m telling you! The leather factor!!…I’m getting so off track here…-_-;) Anyway, Takeuchi-sensei likes to draw “sensuous” clothes on her characters, as I’ve said, and I’d like to bring all of your attentions to the fact that what while the other senshi have uniforms that cover their torso, they make up for that by the huge amounts of leg shown.^^;; The Starlights are the exact opposite: arms and legs almost totally covered, but they wear bikini tops. (And really short shorts.) I don’t think their clothes are as bad as some people claim; they do, after all, wear more than just bikinis. Unlike Princess Kakyuu, I might mention, whose uniform was a red version of the Starlights, without the gloves and the boots, so she was revealing waaay more than her guardian senshi, and I don’t hear anyone bashing her about that.^_^ (Though it’s probably because a lot of people don’t know about her senshi outfit; it’s in the manga.)

In conclusion, it’s my humble opinion that the Starlights’ uniforms are (once again, for lack of a better term) sexy, but not distastefully so. It’s also my opinion that if you insist on the Starlights looking like prostitutes or whatever in their outfits, you’d have to say the same for some of the other characters in Sailor Moon, or it’s really not fair.^_^ But of course, this is just my opinion, so please don’t get a hernia over it.^^ (Although I doubt any of you people are actually still with me after all that…)
