Serena stared at the smooching couple
disbelievingly.
"Oh!" Mina exclaimed. "I didn't know these
two were an item!"
The kiss ended, and Raye was a little dazed.
"I've certainly missed you and your kisses, Raye,"
Darien said.
"Oh..." Raye said.
Serena decided to take it good naturedly. "Well,
you two could use a bit of air. And Darien... You're
wearing her lipstick."
He was surprised. Here he was, kissing another
girl, and Serena wasn't surprised?! "Oh, thanks..." He
took a tissue and wiped it off.
"Well, I'm off to see any cute guys. Coming, Mina?"
"Umm... In a moment."
"Okay. See ya."
Raye, Darien and Mina watched Serena disappear into
the dancing crowd.
"What the hell were you doing?" Mina and Raye asked
at the same time.
"Huh?" Came Darien's reply.
"Mabye this will get to you," Mina said, seating
Darien on the chair. "Please explain?" she said in an
Australian accent.
Darien laughed. "Nice impersonation."
"Darien!" Raye exclaimed. "What were you doing?!
If my boyfriend saw me, I'd be dead by now."
"You've got a boyfriend?" Darien asked. "Who's
the lucky guy?"
"None of your business," Raye said.
"Is he in town?" Mina asked.
"Luckily, no."
"You two haven't properly met."
"No time for introductions. Explain your actions."
The two girls started at him, waiting for an answer.
Darien shrugged. "I don't know. Mina, you said
I was to make Serena jealous of my fake girl friend. So,
when I saw Raye, I decided to kiss her. I mean, we
live in the same town, and Serena wouldn't find
it weird."
"You're dumber than you look!" Mina exclaimed.
"Do you know how Serena will take this to heart? She
is a very emotional person. Now, with Raye here, in the way,
she knows she can't get you back."
"How come I'm the problem?" Raye asked.
"I'll explain later. You, Raye will act as
Darien's girlfriend for the rest of the time you
are here. You got it? Otherwise this whole plan
will be ruined."
"What plan?" Raye asked.
"I'll explain..." Mina offered with a sigh.
Serena walked through the crowd, unhappy.
Why am I so unhappy? She asked herself. I mean,
Darien's got a girlfriend. Big whoopee!
She found herself at the food table and
bit into a piece of chocolate cake. Some of the
icing had landed at the corners of her mouth.
Serena took a drink and gulped down.
She looked up and saw a green and red thing dangling
from the ceiling.
EEk! Better get outta *here* quickly! But
her wish was not granted as Brett stopped her.
"Hey, girl! How are you?"
Please don't make him look up, she prayed.
"Hey, Brett. I didn't know you were invited."
"Yep. Good pal of Andrew's."
"Oh, really?" She faked being surprised.
"What did you do with your hair?" she asked as
she looked at his black hair with blonde streaks
through it.
"Do you like it?"
"It's, um, it's different..."
"Hey, Brett," Andrew greeted his pal.
"Happy Birthday, pal," he said, giving his
friend a hand shake.
"Thanks. Guess what you're under, guys..."
Oh, heaven no, Serena thought.
Brett looked up. "Wow. My Christmas wish
has come true," he said, giving Serena a cheeky
look.
Before she knew it, Brett's lips were on
her own. The kiss was okay, Serena concluded. But
she had a more magical kiss - under mistletoe - four
years ago.
"That was sweet," Andrew said.
"I didn't know you were the sappy type,"
Serena said. "You've got chocolate on your lips,"
she told Brett.
He took a napkin and wiped it off. "Is
it off?"
"Yes," she said then walking away from
the two guys.
She walked until she reached the balcony.
She looked up and enjoyed the full moon shining
down on her.
"Beautiful night, isn't it?"
"Yes, it is, Darien," she replied to the
man standing next to her.
"There's something wrong, isn't there?"
"No. Why do you ask?"
"You're not acting yourself."
"How would you know about me?"
"I dunno," he said with a shrug.
"Well, you don't know a damn thing about
me." She stormed off the balcony.
"What did I say?" Darien asked himself.
"Going so soon?" Mina asked as she saw
Serena pick up her coat.
"Yes. I'm a little tired. Goodbye."
She left.
"Where did Serena go?" Darien asked
Mina.
"She's a little tired so she went home."
"Well I'll be going too. See you guys
tomorrow."
"Bye."
"Wait up, Serena!" Darien yelled in the
cold night's air.
"What do you want?" she asked as he caught
up to her.
"What's your rush? We could have stayed at
the party for much longer than that.
"You didn't have to leave. I chose to."
"I don't know the way back."
"Yes you do. Don't lie," she said, picking up
speed.
"What is the matter with you?" He grabbed
her arm and forced her to face him. "Why are
you being a snob and acting so selfish?"
His words ignited an angry fire in her.
"*I'm* selfish? How 'bout you? 'Oh, I miss my girlfriend,
she's so beautiful, oh, I can't wait too see her
again', she mimicked Darien.
He ignored the mimics. "I care about you.
I know there's something wrong, and I will help."
"Why do you care? Get a life, Darien." She
stormed away.
"I care because I love you."
She stopped in her tracks.
What did I just say? Darien cursed himself.
Mina said not this soon! "You were always like a
little sister to me," he said, patching up his
mistake.
"Little sister," Serena mumbled angrily under
her breath and walking away.
Darien caught up with her again. "Are you jealous?"
"Jealous? Jealous of what?"
"Me having a girlfriend. I remember this
situation was reversed four years ago."
"That's the thing. I miss Ben."
"Ben?!" Darien yelled incredulously.
"Shh! Keep your voice down."
"Ben?" he said a bit more softly. "How can
you miss Ben?"
Serena shrugged. "I just do."
"Ben? He harassed you, he offered you drugs,
he lied to you! The list goes on, and you miss Ben?"
"Above that, he was very nice."
"You've gotta be kidding me."
"Aren't you one of his best mates?"
"Not anymore. He was expelled at Sydney Grammar.
After that, he didn't go to uni."
"So you haven't heard from him?"
"Nope. Last I heard was that he went to America
to be disciplined by this grandmother."
"Oh... Well I still miss him. She turned and
walked up her drive way and to the door.
Darien watched her fondly as she pulled out
the keys and opened the door.
"Good night," she said, climbing the stairs.
"Good night."
The next morning Serena was up early, ready
for a training session with Brett. As she was about to
reach for the door, Darien did.
"Hmm," she hummed. "I didn't notice you waking
up."
He opened the door and let her out before him.
"I thought I might drop by and say hello to Brett."
"I never knew you liked him," she said, locking
the door.
"Who said I liked him?"
"So why are you visiting him?" she asked as they
reached the side-walk.
"I thought I might give him a welcoming present."
"Huh?"
"A punch in the nose."
"Don't do that! He's my partner and we have finals
in a month!"
Darien shrugged. "Not my prob."
"Darien!" she yelled.
He laughed. "Only kidding, Serena. I just want to
see how he is doing. We were friends once, you know."
"Hmm... I was begining to suspect that you didn't know
what friendship was."
"Oh, tragic!" he said, placing the back of his wrist
on his forehead and pretending to cry. "How could one think
of me so!"
Serena sighed. "When are you going to grow up?"
"Well, childhood's a special thing, and I'm not going
to be a child for the rest of my life," he said, not very
serious.
"Well where have you been for the past ten years?
You're twenty-two, Darien; *not* a child."
"Oh yeah. I forgot about that." He gave her one of
his boyish smiles.
Serena sighed and trodded along the child next to her.
"Why did you bring Darien?" Brett asked once he and
Serena were on the ice.
"I didn't. He tagged along."
"Is it true that you kissed him?"
"What?"
"Did you kiss him?"
"What's it to you, anyway?"
"So it is true?"
She hesitated a bit. "Yeah. It was under mistletoe."
"But he said he loved you, right?"
"Who told you that?" she asked, eyes narrowed.
"Lets just say a certain little brown haired girl..."
"Sam," she muttered.
"Is it true?"
"Shut up, Brett!" she said angrily. "It's none of your
business."
"Fine." He swung her around, ending the not-so-good
routine. He kissed her hand to complete the routine.
The look he gave her when Brett kissed her hand, sent
shivers up Serena's spine. It was a look of possessiveness.
"Is that guy giving you trouble?" Darien asked as he
gave Serena her towel as she stepped off the ring.
"No," she lied.
"What were you talking about so much?"
"Nothing."
"Are you sure?"
"Long time no see, Darien," Brett said behind Darien.
He turned. "I would say so." He shook his hand. "Nice
hairstyle."
"Thanks, buddy. How's your skating career?"
"I think you should know about that."
"You quit?"
"Hmm."
"Ah, well. You're missing a lot." He turned to Serena. "Do
you wanna go out for a while?"
"Sure, Brett. Darien, you can go see Raye at the Cherry
Hill Temple."
"Oh, um, okay."
"We don't have to do our routine again, do we?" Serena
asked.
"If we get outta here soon enough, we won't have to."
"Okay, lets go." She picked up her bag, and walked out
with Brett.
Darien realised he didn't know where Cherry Hill Temple was,
so he went to the Crown Cafe where he met with Mina and Raye.
"I'm going to kill myself one of these days," he said,
hitting his head on the table.
"It's your fault," Raye said.
"Thanks for your sympathy."
"You're welcome."
"Darien," Mina said, "just tell her how you truly feel.
Is there anything to lose?"
"Yeah, my friendship with her."
"But you guys hardly even talk to each other!"
"But I might be attending Tokyo University."
"Well, simple," Raye said. "Don't."
"Just go tell her!" Mina urged. "This plan has gone bezerk,
and there's nothing else we can do. All *you* can do is tell her
the truth."
Darien looked up with determination on his face. "Yeah!
I'll go see her now! Where do you think she'll be?"
"Try the park."
He stood. "Goodbye ladies. I am off to the park!"
"Weirdo," Raye muttered.
Darien walked around the snow covered park and finally
spotted Serena and Brett on a bench together. Darien thought
he might wait for a minute or two to hear and see their conversation
behind a tree.
"Okay. You can give me it." Serena giggled.
Darien was then surprised when Brett leaned over and
gave Serena a kiss. He quickly looked elsewhere as tears stood in
his eyes. She asked for a kiss! He thought.
He ran back to the Tsukino house-hold.
"What are you doing, Darien?" Sam asked as she watched
her big brother throw clothes into his suitcase.
"I'm leaving. Going home."
"But why?"
"I just realised I had something to do back at the
UNSW campus."
"You have to go to school?"
"Yes."
"Well, I'll go tell Mum."
"I've got a tongue, Sam. I don't need you to tell her
anything."
"Fine." She left the room in a huff.
Darien finished his packing and walked down the stairs
with his suitcase in his hand.
"Darien's leaving!" Sam announced.
"Thank you, Sam," he muttered.
"Darien?" Martha, Darien's mum said. "Why are you leaving
so soon?"
"I have to do something back at the campus."
"Well, okay," she said, worried. "Will you be okay?"
"I'll be fine, Mother."
"Okay. Do you want a ride?"
"No, it's okay. I'll catch a taxi."
Darien said his goodbye's and thank you's, not waiting
for Serena to get home.
He climbed into the taxi, bound to the airport.
"Where's Darien?" Serena asked Sam.
"He left."
"Where? To the cafe? I didn't see him there."
"No, to Sydney."
"Sydney!? Why is he going there?!" she said, ready to get
her coat and find him.
"He has to do something." Sam shrugged.
"I'll be back soon, okay? Just tell my parents I'm out."
She ran to the door.
"You won't be able to make it!" Sam yelled. "The plane
leaves in half an hour!"
Serena made it though the traffic in record speed,
but Darien was already in the boarding lounge.
"Please," she argued with the staff. "I just need to say
goodbye to my friend in there. Darien!" she yelled, seeing him. He
couldn't hear her.
"I'm sorry miss," the lady said, "But I cannot permit
you in without a boarding pass."
"Please." She started to cry. "I just need to say something
before he leaves. Please!"
The lady looked at her, and realised it must be something
to do with love. She sighed, and let her in. "I'll be watching
you. You only have five minutes."
"Thank you!" Serena ran to Darien. "Darien!"
He looked up from the magazine he was reading. "What are
you doing here, Serena?"
She sat next to him. "I just wanted to say goodbye." She
knew he wanted to tell her something. Well, that's what Raye
and Mina said.
"Goodbye," Darien said coldly.
"Huh? Don't you need to tell me something?"
"No, I don't think so." He turned a page.
"Darien?" Tears stood in her eyes. "Raye and Mina said
you had something to say to me."
"And what was that?"
Serena started crying softly. "Don't you love me?" she
whispered.
"I can't believe I do."
"Flight three thirty-four to Sydney, Australia, boarding
at gate seven."
"That's my flight." He stood, and picked up his hand
luggage.
Serena stood. "Why don't you want to love me?"
"You obviously love Brett."
"Brett? No I don't! I love you!"
"Last call for flight three thirty-four."
"Why did you kiss him?"
"Kiss him?"
"Look. I have to go now."
"No, *he* kissed *me*, Darien! I love you!"
"But you asked for the kiss!"
"He said he had something to give me. I never thought
it was a kiss. I slapped him after he kissed me."
Darien stood silently, looking at the girl with pure
love and shining in her eyes.
"I love you, Darien. . ." she whispered and then
wrapped her arms around his neck and clung onto him. "You're
not going anywhere!"
He laughed and pulled her back in his embrace. "I love
you, too."
"I know you do! You’re not going home so soon, are you?"
"Of course not."
"Okay, now, plant one right here," she said,
pointing to her lips.
He chuckled and blushed a little. "Plant what?" he
teased.
"You know!" Serena slapped him playfully.
Darien smiled and they kissed, finally revealing their
hidden love.
