People Long Ago
"In My Life" original music by the Beatles
Joe Chang, pictured here in 1964, lived on a shrimp platform in Bayou Broulleaux(French for "gnat"), not far from Grand Isle. Many Chinese and Filipinos lived on these shrimp drying platforms. The platforms were built in the water. One such platform, Manila Village, in Barataria Bay, was home to many families. Mr.Chang lived on one all alone. He had many visitors. I remember going trawling with my dad one day, and he brought me there to visit. He referred to my father as Golden Eagle brother, because my dad's brother, Adam, had a boat named Golden Eagle. After Hurricane Betsy in September, 1965, we never saw him again. There was one other Chinese man that we knew. He owned a small store,Dip's, in the middle of the island. His name was Lin Dip Gee. He lived on the island a long time with his family, then they moved away. If anyone knows where they might have gone, please contact me.tarheel@cajunnet.com
The Esponge Family
The following pictures are of the Esponge family. Tomas Esponge originally came from Italy. Census records of the 1800's show him living in Cheniere Caminada. I don't know if the original name is Esponge because the census taker wrote the name as Spongia or Sponzia.
This picture on the left is of Forrest Esponge, son of Adras and Grandson of Tomas. The picture was taken about 1914. The woman is a girlfriend . He later married Anecia Cheramie. He moved to Grand Isle and opened up a French Bread Bakery down Santiny Lane with his brother-in-law. He is my uncle who would take me to the cemetary. He and his wife took me in when Dad was in the hospital with polio. Bo-bor, as he was called, died in 1963.He is pictured here on the right in the 1950's with his nephew, Cisco(Dorcelie Esponge, Jr.)

Dorcelie Esponge, Sr.

I think these are also some Esponge children.
The Vizier Family
This is a picture of three Vizier brothers, Julian, Silas, and Tompus.

Curtis Vizier and Vernice Vizier(left) in the early 1940's in Grand Isle. They are the 2 youngest children of Dod and DoDo Vizier. The family was originally from Golden Meadow but moved to Grand Isle when their father, Felicien(DoDo) and his brother-in-law, Forrest Esponge, had a "family feud" with Felicien's father, Beauregard, over some land. That was in 1932; Curtis was only 6 months old. The picture on the right is of their mother, Sevia Esponge Vizier(Dod). The baby is Vernice and the 2 boys are Adam(now deceased) and Harris. Curtis had not been born yet, so this had to have been taken in Golden Meadow. The oldest son, Ojes, died as an infant, as he was being brought home from New Orleans to see the doctor. The doctor perfomed a circumcision and he bled to death. He is buried somewhere in the Cheramie Cemetary.
