With the introduction of medium-range missile (MRM) platforms as a more cost effective means to deliver vast amounts of damage on the battlefield, MechWyrks engineers began designing new BattleMechs to possible replace the aging Urban Defnse Mech series. Specifically, the UDM-2A Hellstorm was targeted for the MRM redesign. Unfortunately, to make a lighter and faster version that could still support the massive missile platforms, designers would require expensive lostech.
Since the UDM-2 Hellstorm project was already underway to upgrade Hellstorm production and return them nearly to their Star League glory, the MRM designs were scrapped.
A young engineer, Yakamoto Keito, surveying the MRM racks that were purchased for possible 'mech prototypes, began designs of his own. Although his original design accommodated the Luthien produced missile racks in machine's chest, MechWyrks production models necessitated placing the weapons in the BattleMechs arms. With the missiles mounted in the arms, the new 'mech, dubbed Kowai, could fill an anti-aircraft role as well rotate the weapons to fire rearward if necessary. Having the ammunition stored outside the main body also helped to protect the BattleMech's interior in case of an internal explosion.
Since the Kowai lacks the range of the Hellstorm, it is usually relegated to second-line defense in a defensive role. As a sweeper, the Kowai excels in destroying resistance pockets often with tremendous (but visually spectacular) collateral damage to buildings. Although the Kowai lacks hands to help it in physical combat, the threat of nearly 100 missiles launching simultaneously is enough to keep other BattleMechs at safer distances.
