First, the facts as given by me by the Visual Dictionary and everything else official that I've read. According to the dictionary, Maul is the most highly trained Sith in the order's history. He uses his physical prowess and tacticl abilities when performing a task for his master, Darth Sidious. He's more patient than most sites/books give him credit for; he knows his time for dominance will come. They also mention that his facial tattos are evidence of his complete dedication to the Dark Side.
Maul has vestigial horns like the Zabrakian Jedi Master, Eeth Koth. This only leads more people/fans to believe that Maul is also part of the Zabrakian race. I'm guessing his eyes are a result of his obedience to the Dark Side. (ie It sorta warped him, but in a good way. Think about the Emperor's eyes and how they changed!)
His clothing consists of a black tunic/robe with a field cloak that has been cut short to allow easy movement during fights. He wears a wide black leather belt that conists of three thin straps and two large ones at the top and bottom. It fastens on the side with a silver clasp. He wears gauntlets as opposed to normal gloves and his boots are very tough and possibly quite heavy (for his opponents) but light enough to enable him to act quickly. (ie Kicking certain Jedi twits in the face multiple times)
His dual lightsaber was normally used as a training weapon but Maul took it to the extreme and pushed his physical and Force-assisted abilities to the limit in order to master and perfect this deadly weapon. In any other hands, this lightsaber would be very dangerous to its weilder. In Maul's assured grip, it moves with him instead of against him. The activator switch is the first red button at the top (left when lying down sideways)and the gray button below it is the control lock. More switches can be found on the handle of his lightsaber (estimated to be at least a good two feet long) and each has a certain function. Blades believed to be four to five feet in length making the entire thing at least seven feet tall. (wow that's big, these are my mental estimations by the way)
The wirst link Maul wears while on Tatooine allows him to summon his "dark eye" probe droids, set off bombs (yay!), and do all sorts of dastardly deeds worthy of a Sith Lord. It also recieves from surveillance devices.
His personalized Sith Speeder was designed with an open cockpit to allow easy dismount. (As seen in the movie) It's devoid of any lasers or weaponry, save for whatever Maul happens to have on him at the time. He prefers using his lightsaber as a direct assulat and bombs for far away.
His electrobinoculars are equipped with radiation sensors for night vision and powerful light-gathering for long distance scanning. The scanners are linked to his ship, Infiltrator. It can detect life forms, locate targets, and power frequencies. Shapes, colors, or engery types can be set as targets. It also detects invisible defensive shields.
Maul uses three "dark eye" probe droids while on Tatooine. These devices can send transmissions back to Maul. It can be set to locate certain individuals or information.
Now for the fan-facts. It is rumored, or has been said on Cinescape.com, that Maul's real name is Khameir Sarin. He's Zabrakian from the planet Iridonia and was found at age twelve by Sidious. Sidious then instructed Maul to set a trap for his friends and ended up killing a dozen or so Jedi Knights in the process. No family was spoken of in this article. Maul has no links left leading to Iridonia and seems to want to keep it that way. Those are the only believable rumors I know of.
