Click on the song that you want to preview and save the song file under the .zip extension. I recommend the program GetRight to assist in your downloading.

(2) How do I open the file that I've downloaded and how do I play it?

You need to have a zipping application to unzip the song file that you have downloaded. A popular application is WinZip. You can download it at http://www.winzip.com. Once you've unzipped the song file, you can play it on your MP3 player. If you do not have a MP3 player yet, I recommend the Winamp player. You can download this freeware player at http://www.winamp.com.
