shall not rise to defend the empire."

"What you do not understand can kill you."
-The Tao of Shinsei
Weaving steel and sorcery into a mighty force, Clan Dragon is the most
versatile in battle. With their secret rituals and ancient magic, they are
an enigma to the other clans. Isolated in their moutain keeps, they avoid
the politics of Rokugan.
Recognized by their distinctive tattoos and shaven heads, the Dragon are
the cause of spectacular rumors as reports spread of their forces being led
by the fallen lion Toturi, of the disappearance of their champion, and the
abandoned station of Mirumoto Hitomi, the inheritor of their Ancestral
Sword, to walk the path of Meifumado in pursuit of Hida Yakamo.
Reports have also spread of the clan in fact retreating further into
seculusion and heavily fortifying their vast mountain keeps in preparation
for events even greater than than the rise of a new emperor and the return
of an ancient evil.
"There is no death. There is no failure.
There is nothing but victory for those who have
strength and purpose. We are the Dragon.
We have strength.
We have purpose.
We shall bring victory home."- Togashi Yokuni, clan champion.
Clan History and Structure
"The Dragon know secrets we cannot even hope to understand"-Isawa Tsuke
The origins of the Dragon remain shrouded in mystery, and there is a
belief it is truly tied to the Great Ryu, the mythic dragons of ancient
Rokugan, who themselves are said to be returning in rare encounters to
defeat the growing menace of the shadowlands.
The Clan is composed of four major families, and several minor
families, or subclans- The Togashi, the Mirumoto, the Agasha, and the
Kitsuki. It is difficult to evaluate the total strength of the clan,
a policy that is deliberate.
The Togashi Keep is the center of clan decisions, and is notable for its
unscalable walls and the difficulty of penetrating its defenses. It is
to here the ronin Toturi first travelled seeking allies.
The Dragon are strangely missing from the prophecies of doom that
address all other clans, even the Naga. For centuries, it had been
speculated that the clan would in fact die out before the final
conflict, although only a small minority believe that now.
"The Secrets of a thousand generations is engraved here. Learn it well,
and you will have the wisdom of our ancestors"- In reference to the
rediscovered ancestral armor of the clan.
Clan Resources
The magic they use is secret, but the gold-works of Dragon House
are widely known as the finest in the empire. Few outside of the
clan know how many gold mines the Dragon control, and were it not for
the formidable and isolated defenses of the Dragon, such resources
would undoubtedly be under continuous assault.
Although there have been times that the Emperors have sought the
riches of the Dragon clan, they have consistently been reminded that
the allegiance of the Dragons are worth far more, and have been thus
far content to let the Dragon pursue their own course in such matters.
The Code of Ryudo
"To express the unexpressable is akin to
the finite contemplating the infinite"
To many it is a rumor, but to the Kenryu family it is a fundamental
element of life within the Dragon Clan. Ryudo is a complex set of
ethics that is not a replacement of Bushido, but rather a complement
to this code, akin to the treatise of Sun Tzu to the work of Miyamoto
Musashi.
Ryudo, like Bushido, is so deeply interwoven into Kenryu and Dragon
life that it is impossible to distill it into a single series of statements,
but is comprised of many oral traditions that have only occasionally
been transferred to paper by the sages.
An important element of the Ryu philosophy is in memory. It is the
duty of all Ryu to remember their duty and their ancestors, and the
examples they left behind. The Ryu carry their histories within them.
Examples of Ryudo philosophy will be covered in greater detail in the
months ahead.
Clan Allies
Although the Dragon do not normally associate with other clans in
common politics, they still possess stronger friendships with some
more than others.
The most notable of such alliances are with the Ronin Toturi and
the Naga.
The alliance with Toturi was controversial to many, but
entirely consistent with the principles of Ryudo, which emphasize
the Way of the Heavens over the Way of Earth. Toturi sought the
defeat of a growing menace beyond earthly schemings that the Dragon
House respected. In response, the Ryu sent some of their most prominent warriors to
assist him as necessary, believing the ultimate justice of his cause
could prevail only with the initial support of the Dragon.
This same alliance was vital towards the rediscovery of the Naga,
whom Mirumoto Daini encountered while travelling with a force
composed of Dragon, ronin and Unicorn troops in the traditionally
unwelcoming swamps of Rokugan. There is a deep connection between
the Dragon and the Naga that extends beyond what many suspect,
although at present the alliance is being evaluated closely to
determine if it will continue.
The importance of an alliance with these two unconventional groups
will take on more importance when addressing the overall strategies
of the Clan.
The Dragon have traditionally concerned themselves with the affairs
of the House Phoenix, who are in some areas superior shugenja to their
own skills, but in others are as but younger siblings. The Dragon
typically assist Phoenix efforts and defend them against the
predatory inclinations of other clans.
The Dragon also have a relationship with the Scorpion that is
barely understood by many, but makes sense because of the
traditional role of the Scorpion as the keepers of the Black Scrolls.
The Dragon operate against a wider scale of history than many other
clans such as the Lion or the Crab, and consider affairs relating to
the Black Scrolls and their keepers of significant interest to them.
While there have been occasional skirmishes between the Unicorn,
relations with this clan have traditionally been respectful and
uneventful in the broad scheme of affairs.
Relations with the Crab clan presently border on antagonistic.
Although there is respect for these traditional defenders of the
borders against the shadowlands, obvious failures and outright
alliances with the Oni are considered intolerable.
The blood shed between the two clans has only served to further
strain relations, particularly with the recent loss of the
Mirumoto clan to battles with Hida Yakamo and his forces.
It remains unclear whether recent reports of the death of the
Great Bear Hida Kisada will improve relations between the clans,
and the likelyhood of Hida Yakamo rising to take the role of Clan
Champion makes a reconciliation unlikely.
