The Humble Camps

The background is of the area on the island where the homes used to be.

At the eastern end of the island before getting to Bayou Rigaud is an almost treeless area where several oil companies(Humble Oil, Halliburtan, Conoco, and others) did business. Many of the employees of these companies lived here in homes provided. There were 3 sections of homes-one small section owned by Halliburtan- and another owned by Rotor Aids, and the largest owned by Humble Oil. Most of the families were from out of state-Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Oklahoma, and one family from Oregon. As children my friends and I thought they spoke "funny"(with their southern accents) and they became known to us as "Texians". A good many of them were and still are wonderful people(those that have remained in the area) These people provided opportunities for all of us on the island to be in the Boy or Girl Scouts or Brownies and paid for schoolbuses to travel and bring 4 busloads of children to the various schools on Bayou Lafourche. Some of them stayed for just a short time. I would be less than honest if I didn't say that some of the children looked down on us "islanders". I guess they thought WE were odd. These people are a part of Grand Isle's history since the 1940's. In the early 1970's few families were left and many of the homes were sold and moved off the property. Some of them can be seen as far away as Lockport. Anyway, here is a partial list of people I can remember.I don't always know the parents names or all the children--an * indicates the names of the children.
