THE OUTER BANKS

of North Carolina

(nothing could be finer)

This is MY lighthouse.

Hatteras Lighthouse

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the most beautiful lighthouse and the most recognizable, and the tallest lighthouse in the country at 180 feet. The black and white spiral design is a striking contrast to the sandy beach and the beautiful blue sky above North Carolina's Atlantic Coast. It, and the other lighthouses, were all given different colors or patterns so that mariners would not be confused. When I last saw it in 1996,it was in serious danger of falling into the ocean. Huge sandbags had been placed near the base of the lighthouse. There was talk of moving the structure to another location. Aside from this being a risky undertaking, the money was not available to do it at that time.(UPDATE-The lighthouse was moved in 1999-I found out about it sevral months later)

Currituck Lighthouse

Currituck Lighthouse is located in Corolla, NC, in the northern part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It was built in 1875 because there was too big a gap between Bodie Island Lighthouse and Cape Henry Lighthouse in Virginia and is 150 feet high.. I suppose they ran out of black and white designs because they decided to leave the red brick unpainted. I don't know, but I could have come up with a few ideas....black and white...polka dots...zigzags.....vertical stripes.

Bodie Island Lighthouse

Bodie(pronounced "body")Island is also 150 feet high and was first lighted in 1872. It is painted in black and white horizontal bands. The house in the picture is a visitor center. It was originally built as a home for the lighthouse keeper.

Cedar Island Ferry

A memorable and relaxing part of the trip to the Outer Banks are the ferry rides. If you come from the south ,traveling north through the towns of Morehead City and Beaufort, you will take a 2 hour ferry from Cedar Island to Ocracoke. Passengers on the ferry bring bread and crackers to feed the gulls. The gulls seem to already know that the passengers usually bring food for them because they are flying around as the cars begin to line up early for the trip. They take bread right from your hands.Once on the Cape Hatteras, there is another ferry ride of about 30 minutes.
