Although in service since 1958, it took the
IAF years to circumvent an arms embargo and acquire 24 aircraft from Germany.
The S-58 was used for rescue and was capable of transporting a ton of cargo.
It is particulary remembered for airlifting troops behind Syrian lines
in the waning hours of the Six Day War, enabling paratroopers to seize
the Southern Golan.
