Artie's father Dr. Maddicks spent every waking hour trying to get his son back to being human after Artie started showing signs of being a mutant. First his skin turned pink, then he became bald and eventually became mute. Artie used his holographic powers to  communicate. Dr. Maddicks asked Hank McCoy (X-Mens Beast) to help him revert his son back to his old self but in the process beast reverted himself back to his blue furry beast like form. After Arties father was murdered, McCoy took Artie to live with the X-Force team. Thats where Artie met his life long friend Leech. Eventually Artie and Leech were kidnapped by Gene Nation to lure Emma Frost. GenX defeated Gene Nation and enrolled Artie at Xaviers School were he spends most of his time with Leech.

Leech was born with his appearance so its no wonder why he spent his childhood underground with the morlocks. Leech had a few encountered with the X-Men during the mutant massacre when the morlocks fought the X-Men using Leech's power as a great advantage. Leech ended up with X-Factor which is where he met his friend Artie. He and Artie were kidnapped by N'Ashtir, some demon who tried to sacrifice them. After that Gene Nation kidnapped Leech (and Artie) and used him to damper Emma Frost's powers. There plan was thwarted by Generation X And Leech went to live with the team at Xaviers School were he spends all his time with his buddy Artie.
