The following are baggage train rules for WFB 6th edition. They are pretty much similar to the baggage rules from WFB 3rd edition, just brought up to date a bit. In addition to the variety and expanded tactical aspects of adding the baggage rules into the game, it also gives a chance for some fun modeling. Wagons, draft animals, and camp followers all offer great modeling and painting opportunities. Naturally, we hope to have some photos of our own baggage models up at Condottieri in the near future. There are several ways in which baggage can be used. It can be used as part of a special scenario, in which case you can use the rules here, or change them to fit the particular scenario being used. Both sides can agree to use baggage in a straight-up fight. Use of baggage can also be previously agreed upon as an OPTION for each army, since it is worth extra VP for either side, depending on whether it has been looted or not. In any case, feel free to change the rules to suit yourself and your opponent/group. As always, feel free to send some feedback. Baggage Large armies must be provided with supplies on the march. While some of this may be forraged, most armies will have a train of supply wagons (or sleds, pack animals, etc.). These remain behind the line of battle, but are occassionally at risk, since the food, supplies, and wealth makes a hard to resist target for potential looters. Many of the non-combatant followers of the army, such as cooks, blacksmiths, and families of the soldiers will stay with the baggage. Although they have no plans to fight in the battle, they may occassionally have to fend off would-be looters. Baggage is represented by 1 wagon and 5 civilians for every 1000 points of the army. So a in a 2000 point game, one would use two wagons and 10 civilian figures. The area occupied by the baggage is a 6" by 6" area, and is extended a further 2" along the long side of the set up area for every 1000 points beyond the first. so the above 2000 point example would take upa 6" by 8" area. The baggage must be set up with its long touching the player's long table edge in the set up area. The baggage area is always the first thing deployed durring set up. The civilians can be set up anywhere in this area. They have no formation, so count as skirmishers. They will move into place to defend the baggage area when it comes under attack, but will not leave the area. They will hide behind wagons, or throw up hasty defenses, so always count as being behind a defended obsticle until they lose a round of combat. There are several armies for which baggage trains are somewhat inappropriate, such as Vampire Counts and Khemri. The undead don't usually need food, tents, or many of the other supplies required by a living army. Likewise, Daemon Hosts have little need for baggage. Skaven armies are known for getting all of their supplies from looting and foraging, and personally carrying what few items they may choose to retain. However, a baggage train would not be entirely out of place. Defenders will have the same statistics as the most basic troop type of the army (normal human for Empire & Bretonnia, goblin for Orcs & Goblins, etc) with the following modifications: WS -1; BS -1; I -1; Ld -2 Defenders are armed with
a single hand weapon.
Attacking the Baggage Any regiment in a position to sack the enemy baggage (within charge range, arc, and line of sight) with NO other enemy figures also within charge range must declare a charge at the beginning of their turn, or make a Ld test in order to resist the urge to loot the baggage. When charging the baggage, move the regiment up to the edge of the baggage area. The defenders will 'rank up' much like skirmishers, and will count as being behind a defended obsticle. If they fail a break test, they will automatically run off the table edge (no roll for distance is needed). The winners will not pursue, but will move into the baggage area to loot the baggage. At the beginning of each subsiquent turn, the looters may make a Ld test to return to the battle, otherwise they will remain where they are and loot. As long as they remain with the baggage, it is in their side's possession. Other regiments must still test to charge the baggage as normal. They don't want their friends getting all the good loot, after all! Once the baggage has been
looted, it may be reclaimed by moving a friendly regiment into the baggage
area. They may move in unopposed, or may have to fight off looters. If
they reclaim the baggage, the player may not claim the 100 VP for having
an unlooted baggage train, but it will deny the enemy the 100 VP for possessing
the enemy baggage train.
