My Mom lived on Maui for 9 years (she
has since lost her senses and moved back to Colderado).
This is her account of her first encounter with geckos. A
personal note (like the crack about her moving back to
Colorado wasn't): Like most Moms, she never liked alot of
the critters her three boys brought home to show her. So
perhaps, in some small way, I am partially responsible for
her aversion to geckos. Geckos are not monsters, just
small lizards that eat "bad" bugs. Please note: The
critters in the background image are not geckos - it's a
joke, OK? Mom's encounter

"THE NIGHT OF THE GECKOS"
First off, I like most critters, especially the harmless
kind. My first encouter with a gecko was on Maui, at the
hotel where my Mom was an asistant manager. I came back to
the room late at night after visiting my Mom at her unit on
the grounds. Unlike my Mom, I had read about geckos and
was a bit disapointed that I hadn't seen one. As I was
putting my key in the door, I noticed a movement up by the
light outside my room. It was a gecko!!!! My first
sighting of a gecko. I thought he had picked a good spot
(by the light), because lights are known to attract bugs,
the geckos primary entree. I must have watched it for a
half hour or more, but I guess I scared the bugs away, and
geckos aren't generally all that active, so I reluctantly
went inside to go to sleep.
The next morning I wanted to make sure of my sighting so I
asked my Mom what kind of lizard would you find hanging on
the side of the hotel. She said a gecko, and I knew my
sighting was confirmed. After the first, I started seeing
them alot and to this day enjoy seeing one anytime I can.
You might come over here and never see a gecko. You might
come over here and see a bunch of them. Just remember,
they ARE HARMLESS, and they eat a bunch of bugs we don't
like anyway. All they ask is a spot on a wall or a ceiling
where they can do their thing. You don't have to love
them, in fact they prefer to be ignored. I'll take a gecko
over a bug any day.
