Fort Lytton - Number Four Position

4.7 inch Naval Gun

Gun Pit Number Four originally housed one of the two 64 pound RML guns of the fort. In 1892, the 64 pounders were moved to the newly added pits five and six, and in it's place, a 6-pound QF Hotchkiss gun was added. In World War II, the pit was again modified, this time to house a 4.7 inch Naval gun which was used to protect the boom defences. This gun was capable of firing a 31 lb (14 kg) shell over an 8km distance.

The boom defences consisted of a mined timber boom across the river which was intended to stop any boats which may have escaped the guns. The boom was observed from a concealed tunnel, entry into which was from the parade ground.
