Johor Bahru Waterfront City, the world's largest single city development on the sea, has commenced construction on the Straits of Johor, beside the existing City Centre in the year 1996.

This mammoth development, measuring 3 kilometres in length and 1.6 kilometres in breath will create an extra 117.7 acres of land for development in the City Centre.

It will have 21 commercial developments, 3 hotels, a convention and exhibition centre, a cultural centre, a new waterfront promenade and numorous condominium complexes which will provide a total of 1,560 units in the development.  Until now, five commercial complexes have started construction.   The first complex to open it's doors will be Lot 1, a shopping complex slated to be opened next year.

The whole development will sit on top of a platform supported by piles piled into the sea.  This development avoided the need of land reclaimation which would create negative environmental effects.

Part of the road system of this RM6 billion project is operational at the moment.
