INFORMATION

The next popular destination in Negros after Mt. Canlaon, Mt. Talinis is also known as Cuernos de Negros or "Horns of Negros." It has three peaks and numerous lakes formed from volcanic vents. Standing 1,903 meters above sea level, it is located 9 kilometers southwest of Valencia and is a reservation area under the protection of PNOC. This mountain can be reached either through Apolong or Lunga, Valencia; Bidjao, Dauin or Calungan, Bacong. In its vicinity are five lakes where wild ornamental plants and wild orchids abound. Animals such as monkeys, civets, wild pigs and ducks abound the place. Rare species of a spotted deer is believed to exist only in this mountain and in Panay Island. Mt. Talinis is the object of mountain treks by mountain climbing enthusiasts. The mountain is covered by thick forest and is an ideal trekking destination since it is easily accessible and has no law and order or insurgency problems. Talinis is an in-active volcano.

WHEN AND HOW TO GO

As mentioned, Talinis has 5-entry point, Apolong and Lunga in Valencia and Dauin, Bidjao and Calungan in Bacong. From Manila, Bacolod can be reached either by plane or by ship (28-30 hours). From Bacolod, a 6-hour trip will take you to Dumagete. You can already gather information and secure guides in Dumagate courtesy of local groups particularly the Cuernos de Negros Mountaineers. From Dumagete, take jeeps bound for Valencia. The route begins at Sitio Lunga, Valencia. You can also hire porters and guides from here. The first part of the hikes is on exposed part of the mountain before entering forested area. Then proceed through rolling hills towards a deep ravine called Dakong Sapa. A little longer you will reach Kaipuhan which is a barren area due to sulfuric fumes. Winding up around the peak called Totoy Dalaga (Maiden’s breast), you will pass by Lake Malingin towards the campsite within Lake Nailig. Summit assulat can be made early the next day before finally descending down the mountain. You can take different route on your way down passing by Lake Yagumyum towards Sitio Bidjao or Sitio Maiti in Valencia.
