TWO RELEASES OF STRINGS OF DESIRE

As you may know Andy is also a painter. Well he uses 2 of his paintings as the front cover of the "Strings of desire" CD. The US version is different than the European version. There are no different tracks, artwork and the box is different.

Strings of desire - USA/ RCA victor 09026633262 is a fold open diggipack.

Strings of desire - Europe / RCA victor 09026633262 is a jewel case

The Green Chimney CD has been released in the US right now, the Japanese release is on June 24 1999. Rumour is that this CD has 2 extra tracks. More about this next time.

TORHOUT WERCHTER 1988 PROMO CD

I already wrote about the 1991 release of a special Belgium promo cd single. Recently I found another one from 1988. Its again in a fold open paper sleeve, with a photo of each band on the front cover.

Philips compact disc at rock Torhout-Werchter 1988 - Polygram 8704592 tracks are not live.

Sting - Englishman in NY
John Hiatt - Thing called love
Inxs - New sensation
Los Lobos - Shakin shakin shakes

TIM ROSE - THE GAMBLER

This is an album which was recorded in 1976 with Andy on guiter but never released in that period. But already in 1991 there is a CD release from this album called "The Gambler", Andy is playing the guitar on all the tracks. The Gambler was only released in France but I do not think it will take you that much time to get it through internet.

Tim Rose - The Gambler /President PCOM 1117

Tracks are : I just wanna make love to you/He was born to be a lady/Dance on ma belle/It'll be alright on the night/Runaway/Movin Targets/The Gambler/Blow me back Santa Ana/Is there something 'bout the way I hold my gun/So much to lose/Bowery avenue/Laurie.

I DON'T PLAY THAT OLD SHIT ANYMORE

From: "Lithium Sunset"

On Friday and Saturday 15th and 16th May we visited four gigs of the Andy Summers Trio at the Pizza Express in London. The Pizza Express is located in the heart of Soho and is a typical jazz club with a dark and smoothy atmosphere.

Our seats were perfectly located in handreach of Andy Summers. It was almost too close. We can almost say we played with the band, cause our feet were between Andy's guitar pedals. The Andy Summers Trio had Dave Carpenter on 6-string bass, Joel ...... on drums (both from LA) and Andy ofcourse on a red Gibson guitar. Andy was introduced to the stage as Britains Greatest Treasury or "Tres for friends" as Andy remarked. The trio has been playing in the Pizza Express the whole week as a promotion for his latest album "Green Chimneys". "An album which has already become a collector's item". They started every gig with the title track of the album, which is a tribute to Thelonious Monk.

On the album Andy's old mate Sting contributes his vocals to 'Round Midnight'. The rumour had been that Sting woul appear at one of the gigs, but unfortunately a reunion didn't take place, since Sting had 'other things' (? no excusse) to do in Paris ?! Andy told he recorded the song at Sting's new palace in Toscany, Italy, but he was kicked out after 2 weeks. I've just listened to the album and believe..........this track alone deserves buying the album. So no Sting, but the Police did turn up at the gig. One of the guests wasn't quite happy with her seat or maybe she expected the REAL Police ?! She left with the Police in the end anyway.

Andy combines jazz and rock music perfectly. One moment the music really goes to the bone, then they accelerate to the limit and create a great wall of sound. All the musicans have the freedom to interper the songs in their own way and play extensive solos by turn.....Andy is there to keep it all together. From the joy on his face you can tell how excellent the drum and bass solos were done.

Apart from being one was the greatest guitarist, he's also a very funny entertainer. Between the breaks he tells jokes and anecdotes. "The reason he 'came out' so funny and stayed that small was because his mother drank Guiness during her pregnancy". But he can also get very annoyed when people disturb his music while playing. At one gig some people were conservating too loud all the time. After several death stares in their direction a look at his band members was enough....he put his foot on the pedal all the way down......and made such noise (Shuffle Boil) that talking become futile. It had a good effect, since these people never heard the end of they song. They left the venue and we got an excellent aggresively played piece of music.

After one song Andy asked the audience what to play next. A certain guy yelled "Monk by Numbers" with was a good catch, but it was overruled by another who screemed "Bring on the Night". Andy replied brilliantly "It's already night, it's nine o'clock. I don't play that old shit anymore. If you want to hear it, buy my video and you can even see me play it". So that's clear ! I even talked to him after one gig and he even didn't feel like playing some of his own material anymore since he was a bit bored of it.......so don't annoy him by these request of even older "shit". Despite this remark he played an encore on the last night's gigs. The encore was "Murder by Numbers" on which the vocals were replaced by Dave's bass playing. A great remake of the original Police song......."no shit like Puff Daddy".

The still unreleased cd was already available at the venue. After the shows everyone was able to get it signed backstage, get some photographs and make a chat with him. No star air around Andy. He told us he hoped to play more venues in Europe later this year, but probably will go to South America first. I recommend to check his website www.andysummers.com for the latest changes.

WHAT HAPPEND BETWEEN 1974 AND 1977 with Andy ?

This is a period of Andy which is very much unknown to all of us. Right now more than 20 years later new records show up with his name on it. This is another one from that period, the is already Anthony Moore's and the above Tim Rose album.

Right now I'm looking at:

!Blap! Records presents "A letter Home" - Have a good old fashioned
Christmas. Earthlight Music 1LP
LRS RT-6152

No I'm not making a joke, this is really the tittle.

Andy is on: Future past present / The question / I believe / Relax.

What is it ? ...... I don't know !!! I think a low budget recording session of a few friends on an album which was made for those friends aswell, very limeted copies were pressed. Expect a sale price of around $300.00 for this. Friends on the LP are: Alex Gargo/Gigi Faryar/Andy Sommers/Bill Nugent/Tim Rose/Dick Rosmeini/Jeoffrey Jillette/Haston Woodward/Hitton Valentine/Kelly Farrington/Kat Kerry/Pat Easley and lots more..........

Guy Barker & Sting

Finally I received the CD, difficult one to get for a cd which was released in 1998. I mentioned in an earlier Freaks that Sting did perform on Guy Barker's album. At that time I didn't knew which one:

Guy Barker - What love is
Polygram Jazz Japan POCJ1436

Sting is singing on a track called "You don't know what love is". A song in the tradition of the tracks on "Leaving Las Vegas".

WHEN WE DANCE 2CD BOOTLEG

Another Japanese 2CDR bootleg release. Again in a tradition of a realy excellent soundboard recording plus full colour artwork.

STING - WHEN WE DANCE 2CDR / no smokers label STMF-0003

recorded live in Miyazaki Japan October 31 1994. Tracks are: Take me to the sunshine/If I ever loose my faith/Heavy clouds no rain/live is stronger than justice/seven days/A day in the life/Fields of gold/Synchronicity II/every little thing she doers/Roxanne/Its probably me/shape of my heart/saint augustine in hell/straight to my heart/an englishman in new york/king of pain/Bring on the night/when the world/when we dance/she's too good for me/ nothing bout me/every breath you take.

What I like about this bootleg is that it has "Take me to the sunshine" and "When we dance" live. The 2 songs have been performed never before live anywere else.

NEW ZOOT MONEY ITEMS

On two samplers , one from Japan and the other from England, you'll find 2 "new" songs by Zoot Money's big roll band which have not yet been released on CD:

1. The Blues Scene - DERAM 8448012 UK 25 tracks with Zoot Money "Get on the right track baby"
2. The Mod Scene - DERAM POCD 1298 Japan 26 tracks with Zoot money "Walking the dog"

But the good part is a CD release with a live concert from 1966. This is not the "Live at Klook Kleek" concert but a totally different one.

Zoot Money's big roll band - Were you there? live 1966 - Indigio Records IGOXCD 518

The CD has 19 tracks all live, also some great pictures of a very young Andy Summers.

VERY BAD THINGS SOUNDTRACK PROMO CASSETTE

As you might know Stewart composed the music for the US movie "Very bad things". There is an enhanced promo CD with one Stewart track but there is also a promo cassette tape with the same track on it. The promo cassette is probably easier to get.

Selections from the Polygram Films - 3 track promo with motion picture soundtrack:
Ozomatli "Como Vez"
Market "Big sound"
Stewart Copeland "Night Drive Home"

Comes in a plastic case with a printed grey/white insert.

Thats it for this month. I'm going on a holiday so FREAKS will be back the first Sunday in September, hopefully with some great news about the upcomming Sting album.

Have a fantastic summer holiday and for those on the other side of the world in Australia and South America , don't worry ! only 6 months before you can do the same.
