Lauren is probably the most popular member of the band, but this may be just because she is the frontwoman, I must admit, I could never pick a favourite. But she is one of the wittiest members of Kenickie, many of the funniest sound-bites having sprung from her convent school throat. Yes, as you probably already knew, our dear Lauren is the product of bride-of-God-type education, as is the lovely Marie.( ahh, for the scarryiness of nuns!!!)
Lauren's father was a Member of Gas Board, who were an early incarnation of Roxy Music ( Who Lauren still like). Roxy Music were a '70s band fronted by famous sheep impersonator Brian Ferry.
She has known Marie for a very long time, first as her tormentor, as Marie used to steal her crisps. But Lauren's first memory is of " Being pushed in a buggy wearing a plastic raincoat that had a little window for my face. We were going to pick up my brother (Johnny) at school. It was raining and I remember thinking 'Aha, it is raining but I am warm and dry'. So my first memory is a feeling of smugness. It was the basis for the rest of my life." And does she have the right to feel smug. Not only is she in one of the best bands ever, but she got all 'A's at A Level.
Lauren is one of the main song-writers of the band, writing most of the first album with Marie, and most of the second with Johnny. She is also a tremendous lyricist, writing about pain and suffering in some of the most beautiful and imaginative ways. Hiding the pain under cheery pop songs, sadness seems to be her ability, among many others, and she wields it with such force that you can almost feel the emotion as she sings. She once said, "Because we're..well, the way we are, and talk like we do, no-one ever seems to notice that the songs I write are generally very, very sad." I do and love them even more for the depth they show.
Lauren has recently launched a budding T.V career for herself. Having an odd, unscheduled 5 min thing with ex-model Vernon on Trouble, a cable channel. In this she and Verne have small conversations on gadgets, toys and the like. She also just started a weekend show on UKPLAY, another digital or cable channel. This is presented with some bloke called chris. The Alphabet Show, as it is so inovatively called, is about a different letter every week. With comedy and music vids to match.
Lauren was voted 'most sexiest lass' by MM readers in september 1997. There's a fact for you. She is also amazingly protective of Johnny, having a real rant and giving a right bollocking to any journalist who tries to say he is just a 5th wheel.
Lauren can simply be described as a peroxide topped thinker who coats her melancholy in sweet riffs and pop sounds. A clever recipe and certainly one for success.
