Suede's Autograph Session,

29th September 1999

It was a very long day, a very exhaustive one too. Had French class in the morning at 9am, so I had to wake up at 6:30am to start the day. Brought all that is required for the autograph session all the way to my school, NUS, in a big HMV bag because I know there'll be no time to stop by my home. Inside the bag - a teddy bear that I am going to give to Richard, some gold and silver markers, the Suede bio book, my Painted People Suede T-shirt and some other stuff I am not able to recall at this point of writing.

School ends at about noon, so from there I met Reyna at the Tampines MRT station. And hell, from there we didn't even know where to start. Reyna had in mind that she was going to get Mat a Malay traditional shirt!! Reyna wanted Suede to know a little about Singapore's culture so she thought that one way of making that happen is to give Mat that shirt, leave alone the fact that his own surname is Osman!

So after buying the shirt ( a nice black one), off we rushed to Tower Records at 5pm to meet some of the members of the unofficial Suede fanclub called Painted People, there. Jayine, Dave and the rest were already waiting. So far, Reyna and I had prepared stuffs to be given to Brett, Richard and Mat. Ok, but what about my favourite member Simon? This had been bothering me for ages, but I still wanted to get that thing that is displayed up there in one of the shops in Towers for Simon. I asked Jayine to share the cost of buying it for me. So what is the thing? It's a small square pillow wrapped in black cloth with a bisexual symbol at the front! I seriously think that he's gonna like it! As for Neil, well, we didn't have the time to think of anything to give to him.

So hours passed, and the crowds gathered. The noise level increased, the pictures of Suede were beginning to be flashed from everyone's hands, and the excitement grew like never before. It was already 8pm. Hey where the fuck is Suede! They're suppose to be here at this very hour! The patience is killing me! I kept on signalling to Reyna that, man, it's really SUEDE we are going to meet!!!

8:45pm. The girl announced, "OK people, let's put our hands together for Suede!!!!" Fucking hell!! They're here! They're here!! You can imagine how loud I screamed!!! Mat was the first to enter, then Brett, puffing his fag away, then Simon, Neil (man he's gorgeous) and Richard!!!! All were in black, except for Brett. With their leather jackets on they really look like fucking Superstars!!! (you know not all bands dressed this way for example look at Blur :p ) Steadily they went to their seats, from left, Mat, Brett, Simon, Neil and Richard.

Before it was our turn to meet them up front, Reyna, Jayine and I were screaming for Simon's name!! At one point he noticed us above his sunglasses! Seeing us waving to him, he put one hand over a fist in a thankful manner and gesture to us!!! Wa-hey!!!

So I am approaching them. Shahira was in front of me. She told Mat about the shirt that he was gonna sign, it was the shirt made by Painted People, the unofficial Suede fanclub. Mat was impressed by the shirt's design and he put it up for Brett to look. Man I observed that Mat was really big when compared to Brett!! Then Mat was about to sign on the front of the shirt. Shahira said "wait!! please sign at the back!" lol. (kesian Mat.)

Then Shahira asked Brett, "you have a cat called Fluffington?" Brett said yeah....and I can't remember what else was said. I cut in, "Brett," and he looked up at me (hey this man's cute!) "I have a rabbit, and he's name is Fluffington." (for a moment I thought, gosh I'm talking to Brett Anderson about my rabbit?!?!) To my surprise, Brett was so amused that he leaned back and laughed loudly!! I remembered him saying,"A rabbit called Fluffington!!.....(mumbles..)" I couldn't remember what else was said!! Damn!! At one time Mat interrupted us about the rabbit thing saying, "Kill it!!" or something, but my mind was focused on Brett, so, sorry again Mat. I decided to say what was supposed to be said to Brett. I held out my hand, smiling, "Brett, Happy Birthday." He shook my hand and smiled back at me saying, "Thank you." Gosh wasn't that sweet. I told Brett that we were actually singing a birthday song for him back there. He was startled and said," oh really?...(mumbles)" again, I fucking couldn't remember!! I think he said he was sorry for not hearing us singing. Well, I thought to myself, don't worry about it Brett, I seriously don't think that you like getting older every year. :p There was actually more conversation between me and Brett, and I remembered my face being like 2 inches away from his!! I will never ever forget this exciting moment. Brett is indeed a very nice person.

Now I'm approaching Simon. Ok, fine, I keep telling myself. It's Simon that I'm meeting, brace yourself. I come up to Simon, stopped, and put out my hand. "Hi Simon I'm Noreen." He shook my hand, looked at me and said, "And I'm Simon." (Damn, I thought, he should remember me!! He should know me by my name! Well I guess he didn't hear it clearly.) There was a pause. His hand is still holding mine and he's still looking at me from above the sunglasses! Brrr, I thought, and let go. Phew. Man was I scared!! But that was an experience woohoo!

So it is Neil. What else am I going to say. I just stand there and put out my hand. He shook my hand and nod to me.  And Richard. "Richard can I shake your hand". He said sure and shook mine. Eeee, these guys are sweet! Eh wait a minute! what about my presents!

I remembered it in time before I was pulled off. "Oh Richard, this is for you." I gave him the teddy bear. He said "Oh thank you" and held it in front of him. I will never forget his thick British accent. Oh yeah!! The pillow!! I took it and passed to Simon, across Neil. (sorry Neil) Simon was so grateful to recieve it.

So that was it. My CLOSE encounter with the boys of Suede. I left the building smiling all the way home, even in my sleep. Gosh. This is just day 1. The concert is tomorrow. Can't you believe it. I have just MET Suede. The guys that I have loved for 2 years.
