UK, London Astoria - September 3, 1997

OK. I imagine a few people want to know about the Astoria show last night? No?

Songs played (in completely wrong order because I forgot my pen).

Album stuff:-

LURGEE, THE BENDS, MY IRON LUNG, JUST, FAKE PLASTIC TREES, AIRBAG, KARMA POLICE, PARANOID
ANDROID, NO SURPRISES, SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK ALIEN, EXIT MUSIC

And the bits you really want to know about:-

BANANA CO, TALK SHOW HOST, MAQUILADORA, MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK, NOBODY DOES IT
BETTER, A REMINDER

One really big downer was Thom being clearly unwell. Before Lurgee he told us that he had food poisoning (er, lurgee) and had
been throwing up all night and was about to throw up on the bouncer in front of him (followed by graphic mime of same). For
the encore he sat down. Ed kept checking he was OK after each song and he looked genuinely rough but he kept sort of
laughing it off and smiling and stuff but it didn't look good.

They seemed to be enjoying the requests from the crowd (ie nothing normal at all !!) And they kept doing stuff like playing a
little chord or sound effect from one song (big cheer) then launching into something completely different. They even did a little "I
woke up this morning" type blues intro before stopping and firing into Just.

Don't remember any reports of A Reminder being played live before ?? Sounded really good anyway. Less sort of resonance
on the vocals, a lot clearer than the studio version. Well worth keeping in the set. Maquiladora was excellent too.

Nobody Does It Better was fantastic and they seemed to enjoy playing it. Good and heavy. Jonny was in excellent form
(anyone noticed he's got a Tamagochi pet thing hanging off his troosers? Irrelevant comment) and Phil was also super-dooper -
his drumming is such a powerful part of the band's sound and stuff.

The crowd seemed a bit subdued from about the fourth row backwards (we were standing at the back near the sound desk
but, as Christian has said, it was the same as a front row seat at a big show). I really thought that a fanclub type gig would have
enormous atmosphere but people were strolling around during songs, getting drinks from the bar and chatting (is this reverse
moshing or something? Will we get signs on the door saying "Radiohead thoroughly approve of mingling and socialising - please
go ahead, especially during Exit Music when you may find it easier to hear each other").

There were a couple of cameras around but they looked like being a personal record for the band sort of thing rather than
anything professional for the use of. Couldn't get hold of a promised DCC recorder or any other type of recorder in time for the
show (sorry folks) but there *must* be a bootleg around somewhere and much better than I might have managed I'm sure.

So, anyway, not actually a legendary show I think and no more than an hour and a half long due to Thom's state. I wonder if
the crowd attitude problem might have been because practically everyone there must have seen them live before so there's not
so much of a revelation when you see Talk Show Host for example. They also stuck very much to the record on a lot of the
songs (Karma Police sounded very like the studio version and unlike the Glastonbury variation and Talk Show Host didn't have
Ed's fantastic T-wah effect rhythm guitar... or, at least, it was very quiet - and I thought that bit was so effective in Barcelona
and on the Glastonbury TV recording). Interesting to see what other people post about this - I mean I'm only putting my
personal view down here - and I believe that Debbie and Izzy were at the front ?? Different atmosphere maybe ??

OK, I'll leave it at that I think. Now to wait till November at Wembley.
