UK, Brixton Academy - September 13, 1997

OK. So, as you know, I got my ticket at the last minute for 20 quid from the daughter of a chap at work. I heard they were
selling outside the venue for 100 quid but who can tell? Decided to go early and queue up and get to the front. In the end I
couldn't get there till 6pm and the queue was already stretching away into the distance. Saw Debbie from the list and also
fortunately bumped into several people from the Barcelona gig coach trip in May. Marina at the front, the Japanese Rh expert
girl next, Carole, the two guys from Yeovil a bit further down - I started chatting to them and joined the line just there - Steve
turned up later also. These people aren't on the mailing list, know squat about e-mail, but they should get a mention anyway
because there are no more dedicated fans. This show was Steve's fourth of seven this year.

About 6:30pm a side door opened and Phil Selway came strolling out, along with a red haired lady, and walked up along the
full length of the queue (the queue runs down an alleyway kind of thing from the entrance door) and then off down the road. A
few people called out "Hi Phil" and stuff but no one ran over to him or hassled him which was really good. He waved and
smiled. I guess they know their fans and that. Not sure what would have happened if it was Thom though.

The doors opened about 10 past 7 and we started edging forwards. Saw Gary from the list and tried to get him in with us but
he missed his chance I think. Then the security bastards opened another door round the side and started letting people straight
in who had only just turned up. Not impressed but might try it myself next time - can't beat 'em, join 'em kind of thing.

So anyway, got down the front. Already 5 deep round the Greenwoods J. and C. area (where Debbie was) but got in just
behind the barriers kind of in between O'Brien E. and Yorke T. Good spot I felt.

Support band kit set up on stage. They came on about 7:45. Laika. Liked the music but severe probs with vocalist type female
front person (who stands at the side). Couldn't hear a word she said or sang. She also likes to prowl around with her guitar and
then "play a solo" sort of thing which really means just hit it a bit and hope some noise comes out. Quite effective in a quaint sort
of way.

Audience filling up behind us now and included pain in the arse element who were already practicing crowd surges and heckling
the support band and generally being complete wankers. Laika finished and tidied up their stuff. Rh set-up started and
particularly "zany" roadie wandered round doing something important in a very silly way. Mic testing expert said "Two.....two" a
lot but said "Tall bloke" into Ed's mike, while on tip-toe and "Small bloke" into Thom's, while crouching down. Oh, how we
laughed. Saw the lost child doll on one of Thom's amps. Is this a fan-made product or something? It's rather fetching anyway.
Lots of photographers started gathering between barriers and stage.

So, then it all started. Fitter, Happier. Instant crowd surge, Dan gets squeezed and remains so for rest of show. Good thing I
hadn't had any tea that's all I can say. Managed to keep pen and paper in reach. Standard new opener Airbag, Karma Police,
My Iron Lung. Thom says, "Time to say bye bye to the nice photographers", and then does cheeky double V-sign at them as
they file away. Bouncer gets moody at snapper trying to catch a last shot and starts pushing him around. Yawn.

Exit Music (For A Film) - people really do use this for a quick chat "Cor, innit hot in 'ere, know-what-I-mean?" "Sorry I trod
on your toe there, old chap". Oh well. Such a powerful song though. (I wonder if people used to chat during the quiet bit of
Stairway To Heaven at Led Zep concerts.) It seems to me that Jonny doesn't actually play anything during the really heavy
"You can laugh...." section. At least I couldn't see him touching anything but he could well have developed a thought
transference device by now.

Subterranean Homesick Alien, Lurgee ("From the album with the silly cover" comment again), The Bends, Talk Show Host
(perfect performance - Ed back up loud in the mix and Thom walks to the front of the stage during the mental end bit and
stands there like Charlie Chaplin in his big boots and baggy trousers and does that wild snaking movement for ages - loved it),
Paranoid Android - excellent performance, Creep - with no intro comment, they just started playing it and then Thom starts
nodding when the crowd start yelling with a sort of "Yes, that's right, we're playing Creep" kind of expression.

Then Bullet Proof..I Wish I Was - good to hear this live, Planet Telex - hitting the mark every time with this selection, the
crowd just yelling along to the words, Climbing Up The Walls - yeah, it must be just a radio Jonny keeps fiddling with not a
Theramin.

Bones and Just - bouncers passing round little bottles of Vittel now as this is the big mosh/squash section. Didn't manage to get
so much as a swig myself. Then Fake Plastic Trees and a break.

Back after a bit of chanting and clapping and stamping from the crowd. Thom sipping a can of Red Stripe - about which strong
lager-styled beverage Kate wrote a rather touching poem on the old list - and then Lucky which fits perfectly just there. "It's
going to be a glooooorious day!!" is really blasted out by the crowd, quite moving it is. Then No Surprises, Banana Co (Thom
says "Shut up" to someone, or maybe all of us, before this starts - don't know why. He was generally taking the piss anyway.)

Last of all came Street Spirit at which point I aptly started to fade out. I would have thrown up but there was no room to get a
deep enough breath. So I turned round and started walking to the back. About 8 rows back the crowd thinned out a bit and I
got some air. Close thing though. Anyway, that was the last song. Lots of people just standing there going "Fucking amazing"
"Fantastic" and "Radiohead are really crap" - honestly, I heard a young lady say this to her boyfriend !! But most people
seemed to have enjoyed it anyway :-)

Stumbled around for a bit trying to make contact with people I started the show with, now squeezed about in the audience like
toothpaste. Got outside and it was chilly now and my shirt was drenched so that was, er, cool shall we say. Drove around
Brixton for a bit following up a rumour of after show party activity but gave up after an hour or so.

Anyway, it was the best of the three shows I've seen so far and I doubt if Wembley will top it (mainly because I'll be about half
a mile away instead of 6 feet) but we shall see. Really good to see all those Barcelona veterans again....

Here's the set list all neat and tidy-ish:- Fitter, Happier/Airbag/Karma Police/My Iron Lung/Exit Music (For A
Film)/Subterranean Homesick Alien/Lurgee/The Bends/Talk Show Host/Paranoid Android/Creep/Bullet Proof..I Wish I
Was/Planet Telex/Climbing Up The Walls/Bones/Just/Fake Plastic Trees. Encore:- Lucky/No Surprises/Banana Co/Street
Spirit (Fade Out)
