Canada, Toronto: The Opera House - June 2, 1997

Opera House

Roger, Jean Francois, Scott and I were basically front row for the entire
show. It was a very efficient show (ever notice that radiohead are always
punctual?), I didn't mind the opener, it was Dayna Manning, I'd say they
were a female version of David Gray, but not as good...the band besides her
were scary, the guitarist looked like a cross between Eddie Van Halen and
Jon Bon Jovi, except he was dirtier and wearing a wife beater...anyways that
was them.  Oh and Jean Francois and I saw the celloist walking down Queen
today too neato.
So the show, started around 10:20pm, and the entire thing was brilliant.  We
were so close that we saw everything, Thom's facial expressions, as well as
the response of the other band members to the show and to the crowd in
general.  They played all their great songs (not that there are any that
aren't) and NO CREEP! yahooo.  We kept waiting for it.  Highlights were the
sound & lights techies turning the fog machine on full during The Tourist (i
believe) right behind Colin, who in turn flashed his two fingers at the
techies...and well the whole bloody show was a highlight.  Out of the 3
times i've seen them, this was way in front.  And that's pretty damn good.
Downfalls included the little annoying girl with her head on my shoulder the
whole time, the people screaming during every quiet part and the singalongs
to all songs on The Bends, esp. Street Spirit...hundreds of tone deaf girls
shrieking Immerse Your Soul In Love aint too nice on the ears.
Standing in line before the show I was lucky enough to see Roger as well as
meet Sara and Nadia, and then after the show we saw Tiff.  There were scary
little boys in line with us that had Silverchair shirts on who's uncle got
them into the show...that shouldn't be allowed.
Did you know that Colin plays keyboards on Climbing Up The Walls, and Thom
plays Keyboards on Subterranian Homesick Alien...I didn't so I thought that
was interesting.
Paranoid Android was so amazingly beautiful live.

Much Music

Okay well, once again radiohead were very punctual, 4:15pm they showed up
minus Jonny...I asked Colin and he confirmed what we had been wondering
about after the show last night, Jonny is indeed sick, with what I couldn't
tell you but apparently it's something with his tummy.  So yeah...
Anyone from the list who was there (besides Roger, i know you :P) I was the
girl whom everyone probably hated, my friends uncle is VP of City (or
something) and so we got inside, talked briefly to Colin, exchanged fleeting
smiles with Phil and then sat down to watch the interview.  We couldn't hear
much from where we were sitting, so we just sat and watched the monitors.
And oh joy there was even a close up of me on TV.  Anyways, I won't go into
everything said because after watching the tape of it twice by myself and
then again because my mother wanted to see it, I'm bored of talking about
it.  Ummm key ideas, they didn't do the video for Paranoid Android at all
(well you know that the Robin creator did, but yeah) they were not involved,
they said they had been watching Robin throughout the recording etc of Ok
Computer and thought it was brilliant and so they sent the song to the guy,
in Stolkholm, and this guy sat for 12 hours and listened to PA back to back
whilst staring out onto the sunny street...he didn't have the lyrics so it's
his own kind of understanding of the song.  "a two sided conversation" as
Thom put it.  Thom said it was their best video yet.
Ummm what else.  Thom was in such a great mood, he (unlike most) likes Sook
Yin Lee a lot, judging by, when he arrived, he went up and hugged her and
stuff.  They spoke briefly of their web site and Thom said that it was
useless to have any relevant information put on it because all the other
sites have the lyrics before the band even writes them...hehe.
It was a bit shit because the interview was incredibly short and they didn't
take questions, and I know Roger had a few to ask, as did I...so that was
crap. Okay back me up on this one:  As soon as Thom came by after the
interview, I spoke to him for a brief second and then couldn't find my voice
at all and was all stupid and choked up...I felt like SUCH a dork, I try and
act normal and ask them stuff that I'd like to know but all I can say is
Ummm you guys are brilliant. (which got a big smile from Thom and a humble
thank you)  I was too shy to run up and speak to them like some were doing,
Colin disappeared RIGHT after, as did Phil, but Thom and Ed stuck around to
do another interview for something else...we went to look for COlin and Phil
because they were so so so nice before, and they were the two I wanted to
speak to more.  Although those who know me will know how upset I was that
Jonny couldn't be there...but the thing with Colin is we know he is Mr
Computer and i guess i am the same just because of the whole list thing, so
I wanted to speak more to him but couldn't. Oh well I'm happy with
everything I got, and my stupid next door neighbour just came over and said
"oh the post man dropped this parcel off YESTERDAY" and it was the 3 PA
singles, I was mad because it would have been nice to bring them to Much
Music or whatever.  But anyways I've GOT THEM thanks to my wonderful friend
who just keeps doing these great favours for me.  SO all in all it was a
wonderfully brilliant 2 days of my life, now I feel like the rest of the
weeks are just going to be so anti climatic because I'd been waiting for
this show and these days for SO LONG and now they are finished...*sobsob* i
still have the memories.  Now I have nothing to do but work, exams, find
another job. Joy.
I'm really sorry this is so long, but I needed to ramble.  Now I need bed,
it's been a very strenuous 2 days.
