Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup brown sugar (packed)
1 can pineapple slices, OR 1 can crushed pineapple
1 sm. jar Maraschino cherries
1 sm. pkg pecan halves, if desired
1 package yellow cake mix

Preparations: Set out the eggs about 1/2 hour before you begin so they'll reach room temperature.  Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Prepare the cake mix per the package directions.

Melt butter over low heat in a baking pan (13x9).  Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the melted butter.  Arrange the pineapple over this.  Decorate with cherries and pecans, if desired.  Pour the cake batter evenly over the fruit in the baking dish.  Bake 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.  Remove cake from oven, and invert at once onto a heat-resistant serving platter.  Leave the pan over the cake for a few minutes, then remove it so the topping doesn't stick to it.  Serve the cake warm.  If you wish, top with whipped cream, or a side of ice cream.
