Carey Marshall

Carey is the second-oldest daughter of the Duke of Stancliff. She prefers single life, and detests being called an old maid. She has reddish-blond hair and blue eyes. She is self-educated, well-read, and very intelligent. She speaks French, Latin, Greek, Italian, German, Welsh fluently, along with passable Dutch and Scottish Gaelic. She also sings beautifully and plays the violin and piano exceedingly well, thought she never does. When in England, she prefers living in her family's smaller, northern estate in the Lake District town of Marshton. She has many friends there, including three young men whom she considers brothers. She refers to them as her "fellows." Frank and Johnny Pritchett, "Scotty" McLeod, Paul Moody, and Edwin Graham have all been friends with each other since childhood. Carey considers Johnny her best friend, but the two would never and have never considered being romantically involved. Carey and Grace became good friends when Grace visited England and acted as her chaperone. As the two were on the ship waiting to leave for America, Scotty ran aboard with one of her forgotten bags. He kissed her quite passionately. Each discovered their feelings for each other, but the ship had to leave before they could say so. Scotty was delayed in following her, and Carey assumed he wasn't interested after she spend some time in Liberty Creek. She began pursuing a relationship with Jack after asking him if she could help him in his medical work. When Scotty finally arrived, the two quickly admitted their love for one another and began a secret affair. They will soon depart on a world tour.
