Most of the covers of Alistair MacLean's books contain two words, just above his name: Master Storyteller. An excellent description of one of my favorite authors. While I wouldn't call his works great literature, they are great stories of intrigue, deception and adventure. I've read some of what is considered great literature and some of it is over-rated, not all of it by any means, but not making me forget that I'm reading a story. That, to me, constitutes a great book. If the author can make you forget that you're on your couch reading a book and drag you into the middle of his story, then I can forgive less than classic writing. Some classic "great" literature fails to do that for me while Alistair MacLean's books do just that. Read my favorites, and if you like them, then move on to the rest, because even the rest is good stuff. My favorites in general are the ones written in the first person: Fear Is The Key,The Golden Rendezvous, The Way To Dusty Death, Caravan To Vaccares and Puppet On A Chain. All of those except The Way To Dusty Death are written in the first person. I'm not really sure why I enjoy the ones told from the main character's perspective, except for the fact that they seem to be even more humorous than the rest. Some of the J Says segments contain plot spoilers, so if you haven't read the books you might just want to read the Jacket Blurb segments since they're only what you'd read on the cover if you picked up the book in a book store. Book cover images were scanned by Dave Rollins. I think the used covers have a lot more character than the nice clean ones available at an ebook store. Thanks Dave!
