Dead Trees Review

The Little Magazine Long on Reading

My name is Paul Lappen. Welcome to a site that will focus on recent discoveries on my never-ending journey through the literary world (book reviews). All types of books will be reviewed here; old and new books, small press and major publisher books, books on subjects ranging from science fiction to politics/current affairs to avant-garde fiction to whatever strikes my fancy.

I am in my middle 40s, single, and am a lifelong, very avid, bordering on voracious, reader. I am also one of those who practically lives in bookstores. Generally skipping the Best Sellers and New Releases, I am the one in the back of the store checking out the obscure and less well-known releases. That is what you will find here at Dead Trees Review.

If you have any questions or comments about this site, if you would like to use any of these reviews elsewhere, or if you are an author or publisher who would like to get your books reviewed here and in Dead Trees Review, the paper version, (Just two requests: No E-Books--I much prefer holding a book in my hands over reading it on a screen, and no comic books) and on other book review sites,
Bookreview.com
Library Thing
Shelfari
Goodreads
Book Lore (from England)
The Midwest Book Review-The Internet Edition
Bookpleasures (from Canada), here is my address,

I have also put together an alphabetized list of all the books I have reviewed so far (exactly 635 of them).

I find that I have many more books that I want to review than space in which to review them through the regular quarterly update route. Therefore, I am starting new sections, Other Reviews and Other Reviews II(I know, such creative names.). Anyway, many more books will show up in these sections, updated much more frequently than usual.
With that out of the way,

on to the reviews!

This is for my father, who recently passed away at the age of 78:

God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around you,
and whispered, "Come to me."
With tearful eyes we watched you,
and saw you fade away.
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
A million times we've needed you,
a million times we've cried,
If only our love could have kept you here,
you never would have died.
