Salvator Rosa was not only a painter but turned his hand to poetry, music and acting. In this Self-portrait painting, he is reagrding us over his sholder with disdainful and disapproval expresssion. Inscribed in the tablet he holds are the words, 'Be silence, unless what you have to say is better than silence.'
