The picture presents a dramatic event. Christ has just spoken the tragic words: 'One of you shall betray me', and the Apostles are asking, 'Lord, is it I ?', some of them are trying to show their love and innocence, some of them are talking between themselfs, trying to figure out to whom Jesus was referring, the others are looking at Jesus and waiting for him to explain his words. They are all very excited, except for Judas. Although he is part of the group, he is isolated, he is the only one leaning on the table, he doesn't move or ask questions as the others. If we take a close look at the architecture design, it will be obvious it has a supporting rule. The central vanishing point is located behind Jesus's head, so is the main opening in the back of the wall with the arc above it - a symbolic halo. |
