The Water Snipe
Aquatica Gallinago
Habitat: The Great Lakes of the Mid-West, but migrates South during the winter season.
Distinguising features: Brilliant colored summer plumage, long bill.

Note this snipe's brilliant colors of which are only in its summer plumage. This bird uses its long bill to spear bugs and small fish. Its name comes from its habbit of collecting a whole bunch of water for its nesting grounds. This bird also prefers to swim and took first place in the Minnesota State High School Swim Tournament in 1986. Its call sounds like a whistling foo-fa-foo.

Hunting notes: One of the more difficult birds to hunt down, you would have better luck getting Netscape to give away their software for free than catching this lake-oriented, migratory bird off guard. This may be one of the only birds that only the elite snipe hunter would even dare to pursue. Neither Jeff or I, in our endless pursuit of the perfect snipe hunt, have been able to get anywhere near this bird.

One thing to remember: in snipe hunting, you NEVER use a rifle or any other fire arms. If you have difficulties in understanding the sport of snipe hunting, perhaps you should read the rules behind snipe hunting.
