Subject: NTSH Source
Comments:
Hi,
Well, I'm really sorry for not having the time to go on developing ntsh. I don't use NT very often any more (only to play games ;) as I installed Linux on my computer.
But I already mentioned that I wanted to publish the source as soon it is ready for a beta-version. Well, I haven't had the time to finish this task, but now I want to publish it now anyway.
It can be downloaded from Geocities or my homepage. But this is for Developers only as I was in the middle of some heavy construction w en I stopped working on it. I wanted to rebuild the AutoCompletion, which is half-way done, rendering the source uncompilable in its current state. So it is _only_ for people, who _really_ want to go on developing ntsh.
I also included a little su program I downloaded and modified. In NT you can get log in as an other user with it, which is really helpfull. If you use it with ntsh, make sure to not let it read it's startup-files (I think, you can do that with "ntsh -f") s you can't get the registry of the other user with this version of su. And ntsh's startup-files depend on the registry. You can download it here and here.

A couple things I would like to see:
As has been asked before, right click cut and paste. I know this is a console app, but it would still be really nice.
A command line option '/k commands', where commands is a command executed upon starting the the shell. I use NT Shell with the MS PowerToy 'Command Prompt Here' (just replace command for all 'DosHere' registry entries to reference the ntsh.exe). This
ould normally be "cmd.exe /k cd %1", which starts the shell in the currently selected directory in explorer. Normally in NTSH I wouldn't need this, because NTSH maintains teh directory it was started in, but I would like to have it start in my $HOME dire
tory if I'm not using the argument (currently by a 'cd $HOME' in the .ntshrc.cfg). Such an argument would allow me to do this.
';' seperated commands. This is especially useful for aliases and the above suggestion.
Thanks. Looking forward to the next release!!

I'm trying to use NTsh on a multiuser NT machine. I have, in each user's environment, set %HOME% to their homedirectory. So, if an individual user types 'cd ~', their new working directory is their homedir. In other words, if user1 types 'cd ~', his new w

Well, I think this is a problem with Win95. On NT it works...
Win95 saves all the console settings in .pif files, which are created for DOS programs.
Well ntsh is no Dos exe, it is a Console Win32 Prog, but win95 doesn't recognize that and so doesn't save the settings.
Sorry, but there is no way to set color/font from the ntsh config files.
The problem with the very tall window is due to scrollback on win95. Disable it (in ntshrc.cfg).

ntsh reads a registry variable ("Startup") to get the script which is executed. It defaults to the setup script in the current directory. You can change it by typing "set !Startup <script>". With the "!" it will change the global config for all user

Subject: external commands
Comments:
you already can use & to start a cmd in background. I haven't included this in the docs as not everything is implemented as it should be (console access...) -> don't use this with interactive cmds!
pipes don't work with internal cmds (like cat) as they cannot be put in background in this Alpha. The next version will start them in a subshell.
Next version will be able so start all files registered in the system, too. You can specify which is considered to be a command. You won't have to add their extention and they will be searched in PATH.
To set your path, use 'setenv PATH=...' or 'path ...' (an alias to the first). Please remember, internal cms & aliases are case sensitive in ntsh (all lower case).
the backslash (\) is used as an escape char in ntsh (like in unix). To increase compatibility, it escapes only special chars, no letters. So if you use it in normal pathnames, there is no difference to DOS. But if you use a double backslash, the first wil
escape the second, resulting in only one to be passed to the executable. You can use one(or two) more backslashes, or the normal slash to include two backslashes in the pathname. (But I will include an option in the next version to use a more DOS compati
le parsing)

I have already thought of some additions for completion by myself: 1. if there is a unique completion show it in another color right after you stopped typing 2. if not and you press TAB, you will get a list of possible completions. Both will need some cha
ges of my currently used structures, but I'm thinking about it...
of course there will be better support for other executables than .exe later.
if you want to display the full path, use $P instead of $p in the prompt variable
(when setting the prompt, don't forget to enclose it in '...'. otherwise it would be parsed only once and wouldn't change when you change the directory.)

I love ntsh. It's going to be great in final release. Keep up the great work. Here's my personal wish list:
1. The autocompletion feature is really nice when typing excessively long pathnames. Is there any way you could have ntsh automatically do this with out the need to press [TAB]? Kinda like in Netscape Communicator, where a feature like this has already
aved me hours!
2. I hope we can run .com, .bat, .lnk, document, and other associated files in the future. For now, Win95 has a 'start' command which will load all of these from ntsh or any other shell for that matter. To make it faster, make an alias for it, like 'l'.
3. Abbreviated pathnames in the prompt: bug or feature? Though it seems a little *too* abbreviated at times, I think it's a great idea for clutter-reduction. You MUST keep it.
Keep up the good work!

well, in the next two months or so I won't have much time to work on ntsh (many tests & other work to do)
:(((
But I will publish my current working version soon. It has many bug-fixes, but most new features are not yet enabled as not all of the code is done now.
