4/20/97 - Bug fixed. Now you can start you message from a very first line. In version 1.1 it could cause the first line of your message being insert to the header of the message.

This is simple e-mailing applet which allows you to send "unsigned" e-mail. General idea of sending any e-mail is to make a connection with almost any server at SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) port (usually 25), set From\To addresses, and send the body of message. It gets much harder if you deal with java applets(,but not java applications, they are out of scope of this note). For security reasons applets are not allowed to contact any server except the server which they were downloaded from. The main problem for this java applet was to find web server that has SMTP service in it. That's why the URL of this applet is www14.geocities.com (see page source), but not just www.geocities.com.

For more information on Java Networking and other Java applets and application check out
Gamelan,the official directory of Java.
For information on SMTP look through RFC821(Request For Comments). Official internet protocols are described at RFC1011.
