Session Start: Sat Feb 27 16:58:39 1999 mouff, here is class url http://members.tripod.com/mominator_2/psp.html mom check out what I did to it. http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Campus/7257/scubaInvite.html still need to reduce again but it is a start eagle, love it can you make the edges of the text more defined for the old girls like me? ? am working on a campaign webpage want replies to go to email address in forms do I just use email address in" or have to add only a graphics question thanks Ghatten...working with forms....what do I use for the the source for info to come back to I want to have people post and come back to an email address That depends on how you are able to get the info back. Are you working in with a CGI bin or do you want it to be emailed. Ok I want it to come back to email ...but I want people to beable to post in a reply seciton Take a look at the lesson for the section on the MAILTO option I am looking at VU's reply a post ruthk, are you talking about bringing it back to your webpage itself, rather than email? Method ="Psst" Action="" Maybe that's what I want Annie If I have a webpage set up will the replies come back there? I was going to suggest also the URL http://wdvl.internet.com/Authoring/HTML/Forms/mailto.html for an explanation of MAILTO Psst=Post so if I have a webpage set up and I want replies to it I use that URL usually there is a line where you put the url for a reply or thankyou page, it could also just be a specific webpage Ok I think I understand I use my url in the Action="" not that I think we were answering two different questions. I answered how to get the form's response emailed back to you that is why i asked what she meant, sorry i am confusing I'm sorry LOL...sometimes it's not always clear! i think ruthk is asking what you just explained ghatten, for the action part yes annie that is what I am asking and not the page that displays after you submit the form what exactly do I use for the action part to get responses? Barta's tutorial also is setup so that you can replies in your email without the use of cgi bin I will check out Bartas thanks
But do look over the tutorials. http://junior.apk.net/~jbarta/tutor/forms/lesson01.html Ok ghatten that is what I wanted to know exactly ..I have to use the mailto lesson 1 also has the information there Kinkell? if using a graphic..a free one from the web..can you set the height and width attributes to make it smaller or is this considered changing the graphic??????? Ah..the issue here is whether or not it would be considered altering someone elses work yes Probably it would technically be an alteration Since you could for example, distort it intentionally and cause it to display differently than intended ok thanks Also if there were some fine detail..it might be "lost" in a smaller version! no it is not distorted, just viewed smaller what about resizing it? can't resize ..it is an animation I can't do that We are really debating technicalities. I suppose if a person has said not to change it or if it's usage includes not changing it Kinkell if you have PSP5 it comes with an animator that will allow you to resize Then it would be "Changed" by whatever method ---resizing actually or with HTMLtags I know that Vikkimouse asks that her images not be changed. my suggestion was to ask person who owned it, but can't find out where it came from no not changed just made smaller to fit vikimouse on the web has specific instructions to not change, resize or alter her images in anyway, or at least she used to do that I would think she means not to change it..make it smaller, larger, add a drop shadow, put it on a button etc. LOL and i have resized animations in psp animator I was told it was hers, but it is not on her site AnneH are you reading my MIND agaiN! so if someone took her image, and placed it on thier site without that information then what? If someone used someone elses images without knowing where they came from and altered them without knowing they should not? Again...treading on strange turf here. right Technically we should not be using images which we don't know the origin!! BUT or someone has permission to use, but doesn't make that same statment the owner made, then what? We know it's done all the time! Don't know what could happen. I hate to break my silence..but someone told me the other day anything on the web can be used by someone else? Don't think MUCH would happen to a "homepage" owener.... It was for group page But the owner of the IMAGE could perhaps ask it be removed. OR take legal action We can only do our best to avoid trouble by trying to be good! some images may be very difficult to trace perkins--I disagree i was told that tiny tiny images are okay in some cases it is the larger images that have stronger property rights, but i could be wrong IF the place you get it from doesn't list a creator, or require you to agknowlede where you got it, and you don't know if they created it or not, then I think you can take a chance and use it, if there is a problem you can always appologize and take it down ghatten? what if she had the image, and doesn't anymore does that make it legal and open to use now as it is on the net? i have now begun to put in tiny elements that help me prove my ownership It's just like the tape recorder ...can't tape anyone elses material..and then ther is cut..copy..and paste.... Safest only to use those that the owner has specifically SAID they can be used public domain with an unknown owner? It is BEST to be safe and only use things that you KNOW are okay to use! But..... Otherwise give them credit-- there is that gray area between black and white black is forbidden white is public domain what about the gray area of public domain images with unknown owners ?? I have just found the image smaller on another free site so will use that one and give them the credit! It's impossible to be perfect. watch out for tiny little things inpicture! lol not everything is black and white you guys? But if you are making a page for a business...or an organization or the like. Don't use ANY images that are of unknown origin! I've started to watermark my images I agree there ghatten with that statement how do you watermark images vikki? boy there are soo many resourceful people here business is different from personnel That I can see Ghatten but if you use some gif or something for fun? Right Ghatten--about one lawsuit and you would have NO more pages to do!! Vikki-- 'splain about watermark, please Like I said, it is PROBABLY fairly safe. But it's definately not easy to pin down. I can give my big-ole example about Paramount! using psp... another layer that sorta blends in with the picture with my initials Many Star Trek fans have web pages which have pictures of the characters in Star Trek on them Some of these pictures were even ones the fans themselves drew and placed on their pages! Paramount, who owns Star Trek and all things Trekky Went after some of these "little peopel "little people" Because they were using the images without permission!! Seems impossible, maybe even improbable But it is true but the fans made them themselves! I remember seeing a familly using a name Disney ued Apparently, Paramount feels VERY serriously about the OWNING of the "Characters" and the images of the people "in uniform" or "in character" and they have a copyright on the names are a violation of their copyright!!!!! probably also feel it would have been easy to ask first what if i took a picture of one of the '"characterhs" with MY camera? Yes, the names AND the "image" I get what you are saying Ghatten... with written permission? go ghatten Now...if it was a picture of the PERSON would i need written permission to use MY own camera andMY own pictures? who PLAYED the character --- say at a convention with the fan Then it would be the PERSON's decision! not to use only to display results if the person were in charecter Yes...if you took a picture of the PERSON and i made site for first grade and had to ask about teletubbies permission! and got their permission...it would be fine...or at least not within Paramount's ability to grip! gripe! However...they own, unconditionally, the images and the names of the characters and have proven they will enforce it!! I wonder if the one I saw had permission mominator and they have the big bucks to inforce it too So....if you are using images about which you are unsure of the copyright. Warner Bros. and Disney have also been filing suits for improper use of their images and music on web sites!!! I can understand that ghatten really but question here? You run the RISK of the owner objecting! yes what if a person takes clip art and colors it in, does that make it theirs? No Granny. That goes back to the original question how can you tell the real from the fake then? i think you are discussing intelectual property rights and ownership of grahpics Again, like Perkin's said..it is sometimes chasing the origin of the universe! Both if you get clip art from cd's that you buy, color it whatever... whose is it? so if it looks like a click art or clip art that is colored in then what? It's going to be a judgement call on your part if you want to use it and you don't know where it came from Some clip art CAN be colored and used. It would depend on the collection from which it came. Doesn't it have to be copyrighted? I have a picture on my web site right on ghatten theres that famous gray area again! I am looking over vickimouses site and some of it looks like clickart the cd's I have don't have any copyright info on them... most people cannot deal with the gray area That was from a collection of clip art that had NO restrictions on it's use OTHER than that it not be resold So I colored it in from a black and white drawing getting back to lesson material can anyone explain mouse over to me so I can understand ...is it image mapping Vikki, no info or no copyright> * z-mominator says everyone should run over to leapins and take her psp class, this way no concern about whos graphic it is,,,make your own! and? Ghatten no info... http://home.earthlink.net/~ghatten/isshe2.gif <<---- made from clip art that had no restriction Hmmm....no file on the disks? Maybe look for a web site? not that I can find ghatten Well then it's use and take the chance or not use and be safe.... again a judgment call that's what I figured LOL I won't watermark anything I use from there... Never any EASY answer to this question!! Has anybody seen the butterflies on my site? yes i have Vikki oh i love your butterflies, those are great I made those with clip art, colored them... found one of them on another site the other nite If you give acknowledgment to where you got it from and it turns out its not theirs can you be sued? she *says* it came from a psp tube that came with psp???? has anybody ever seen a tube liek that? Haven't a clue. I guess you could be, but at least you'd have something to defend yourself with /.....That you TRIED to do the right thing! so if I use the butterflies from jasc I should state they are from there? or if I use their tubes or pictures, I should state so? because the program was bought by me, I can't use that? url vikki? only one to sue you must have big bucks to sue! url where I found it granny? no where you have it? and that site too http://members.xoom.com/vikki_b my sites will end up graphic free LOL there are four... three purple and java script to show three other colors when you mouse over Kinkell you make your own! All that cross-stitch! the other one I'll hve to go look up one thing I have found a lot of ghatten is linking to images from a site to a site, that is a real no no but how can you find if someone is doing that to you? but they are others deigns I stitched Granny, unless you have some access to server logs, I don't think you can tell,. did ask Lanarte about using my stitching of their designs I saw that on some sites, here at vu, was checking the coding and found it Happened to me GW and my server shut down my site!!!! I have heard of it happening but don't know how to stop it may i? * Granny-Wicked says vikki those are not my tubes I've seen some really creative ways to "block" it. Granny-Wicked the other one is http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Pier/6307 it's the purple butterfly in the animation Not sure about the PSP question. You'd have to look at JASc info please explain how to stop it i have small business and i have a flyer that i created for business Mominator, can we answer something> well i found MY FLYER on a website from some guy in florida best one I've seen for people who link to your image, is to replace it with one that says "this image was stolen from" : ) hahahaha I've seen that one! Oh DEaR! and i called a lawyer and he said... Go on.... i had to copyright the flyer first before i coudl do anytning leagally in court how do you copyright a flyer? seriously mominator? Playing happybirthday1.mid received from MJans ¶8o) auto-play I'm not a copyright lawyer. and it would cost me &800.00 just to file the paperwork for inteleectual infringement (obviously!!!!) but i did have a recourse to stop him. go to library and get copyright forms and send them in with the fees Playing getonlne.wav received from LadyBlack ¶8o) auto-play that costs a lot eagle $35 last one I filed he had his site on geociteis and i filed a compalint with goe and showed then my flyer in letter with explaination Site about stealing bandwidth and some suggestions for handling it -- http://www.darklock.com/webguard/index.html and because my flyer has been oput ther for over a year and half thanks otter But...things you design are yours with a sort of "implied" copyright. And if you could prove it was yours "first", I think it would hold up Thanks Otter geo cities took his site down and saisd they would keep him off until this dispute was settled in court Of course it might be more trouble than it is worth.... This I can't judge. good for geo for taking the site down too guess they would be afraid of being sued to once they learned and i have since applied for copoyright....only $20.oo did you get the copyright forms from a library mominator? That really is not nice for the guy to steal your stuff! but to file for trademark, it costs 275>00 and you have to wait a year for clearence I did get them from library Well, I am sure we have missed a few and we did have a spirited discussion! yea, nice does not apply in business! But it's time for HTML1 it is hard to know what to do when you are new on the web, too, I think a lot of people out there don't think that means them the copyright things, because when the load a program they don't read the rules either, they think because I can get it it must be mine? what is the difference between trademark and copyright? is it cheaper to file for copyright? copyright is for document Perkins asks a lot of good questions that I can't answer! LOL! trademark is for mark that identifies you trademark logo etc is different than copyright yes copyright can be entire page or drawing ]first the logo has to go through a process of revelation are trademarks more expensive to get than copyrights? trademark is one mark vikki send email to that person ask where they obtained their butterfly from!! then you got him or her yes Granny-Wicked I did that... she said it came from a tube she got with psp... tell them you like it and wanted to know where to get it from, lol ghatten does a great job of answering my questions i just love her answers! but alot ot TIME and headaches LOL Thank you Mary. not from jasc, that i know of I have all of theirs Granny-Wicked did you look at the one on her site? maybe from someone else that made tubes and put it in there yes I see it I found oneof 'my' graphics on someone's page and emailed her -- she said she foundit through a search engine!!!! LOL I did'nt think so either Granny-Wicked I'd *never* seen it before I colored it... the cheapest way to solve a copywrite issue of something you have created is to mail yourself a copy, in this case an electronic version in a fully sealed envelope with postal postmarks over all taped areas. Do not open this either. If a dispute arises then the post mark will prove the date of creation if dispute is after then it is obvious who has copywrite. there are those ftp clip art search engines esp setup for graphics Otter has REALLY had some troubles with this first you get mad -- then you feel flattered that they like your work enuff to use it!!! ROFL http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/ yes otter.. LOL I told her she could use it... I can understand that otter did it when I was in business and it works Also, I think in most cases if you can PROVE it was yours first, it's going to be good enough. true ghatten id be more than happy to forward the letter to you ghatten I have a poem that I sent Steve/Who over 2 years ago If someone else stole it. Steve knows it is mine from way back! (It's on the web!) not as good as a US post mark : ) midi files are another issue, some of the midi sites have had to take down certain midis that might be copyrighted Session Close: Sat Feb 27 19:08:09 1999
