Saturday 02/13/99 Well, I'll speak for myself; i'm very new to the web and have a small store I'd like to put up a web page; that's why i joined the vu.. when you register your web name does the place that takes your name and registers it put it on as an address or do you need to find someone also to host it?? (is that clear?) You need to find your own host You register your name with an agency that controls the names Your host would be an internet service provider so would you just use the isp that your'e connected with or find someone else?? Most hosts will handle the registration for you....some will make you pay extra (more than if you do it yourself) You should shop around for a commercial web site there are some hosts that specialize in small businesses there are differences in monthly cost and how much web space and how many emails they allow i used internic- they charged 70- for 2 years- is that normal?? i mean separate email address accounts AND what services they provide there is a charge just for the domain registration with internic that is separate from the commercial account itself what would you all recommend as the best way to make comparisons?? is there somewhere that lists differences yes kathyk -- for registering a domain name there are some free web page servers that allow commercial sites I believe some resources are listed in the HTML II class -- but you can do a search kathyk, post your message on the bulletin board and also send email to html@vu.org to see if anyone knows the answer or a good url to recommend that compares them anneH, the commercial account/registration difference is..? Doesn't FreeYellow do commercial? Links to Tutorials, Cyber Schools, Web supplys, FREE web space, and more next to last part flfry is F L F R Y all in lowercase no spaces http://members.xoom.com/flfry/TQFK/ geocities will let you use a domain name if you pay for a geo-plus acct. Question: re: HTML1 stuff...(even if I have a z-)!!...Is there a way to make a list have a wee graphic in front of its items instead of "round", "square" and "disc"? under web supplys/Virtual University web supplys near bottom free pages, hundreds i have never registered a domain, but people go about it different ways links to instructor pages, at : http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/3111/teachers.html some let the ISP take care of it, once they know what name is not already in use most ISPs charge extra if it is for a commercial site too that really isn't part of this class -- email the instructors and we can give you more info kathyk Flamingo -- to your question -- yes Domain stuff is interesting, but not for most HTML1 students. I wonder if that discussion could go DCC or something? just place the tag before your sentence in the list I don't know that tag....what does SRC mean? Zonie...no questions tonight...just logging :)
works real well for that : ) Ahhhh -- sorry -- that comes up in lesson 4!!!! LOL thanks i am looking and did not see what flamingo asked can you wait Flamingo? If not, email us and we'll help you with inserting images now or stick around after class and I'll walk you through it na, it's ok, I'lll look it up. Cuz I can't wait :) anne -- re: inserting an image before a sentence in a list instead of the disc/square, etc. oh ok, « Zonie »: ok I may stick around and find out Question: should I change my nick to remove the z-every time I think of a question? my last question; how do i get graded on the homework?? Please Flamingo -- and then wait to be called on Kathy -- same thing -- please wait until we call on you the last lesson in Week 6 will tell you about grades and there is also a final exam Kayroller -- question tonight? I have 2 questions I have 2 questions [1] I had a problem with Unordered lists I understand what the tags ment. I but
list name then I did the
  • and at the end I did
but when I uploaded to page the list didn't show only the heading.Did I miss something? but ask someone to take a look at it if you have questions Question [2] Where do you place
  • ? probably a < or > : ) Do you have a URL for us Kayroller? no I didn't but them on URL usually it is something little missing in the code or even something from above where you put the code they didn't work for me ok can you DCC a copy of the HTML file to me or other ? Back to Flamingo's question=When I typed
  • The first bullet came out round and each of the next four that I wanted a bullet on came out square, Disc and Round??Do I need to put the tag only once or before EACH list.? I dont have them on it now bonka -- just a minute please Question [2] Where do you place
  • ? k Kayroller sorry can you try to recreat it kayroller? the TYPE would go in the UL you can put them in each LI if you want each one round oh ok then it is not a heading not all browsers will show each kind the same way either thank you I will work on doing them again this week
  • is not a heading no when you have nested lists, each one looks a little different too is for the heading ok this was my first time trying them the disc shape is usually the default, you only need to define it if you want something else Thank you for you help EmptySpace -- do you have a question? I have a few questions but after I post one question I'll go to the end of the que. [1] What is the difference between 'index.html' and 'othername.html'? How exactly is 'index.html' used? Your welcom Kayroller! You should always name your first page index.html it is the default for the URL when someone goes to your web site index.html is what the browser will look for if no other html is stated, like start.html or next.html or check with your ISP in case they require a different name, but index.html is usually what is expected http://www.vu.org/ and http://www.vu.org/index.html would take you to same place : ) but check with the place you put your site and see if they recommend something different yes some use default.html I've run into one... I think it was globe.com that uses default.html for instance -- if you don't use the default or index.html -- people can backup on your URL and will see your directory page mainly when you start with week 3 and start uploading your virtual notebook you will keep the filename that you have thanks, I think I understand HOW it works, but I'm not sure as to WHY. then when you decide what to do with your site you will upload or change what you want people to come to first and make a link to your virtual notebook from index.html because it is the default that the browser will look for EmptySpace I see, thanks if you have a website at xoom and do not have an index.html there, what will show is all of the files that you have there kind of like a directory the index.html being there will hide those files same at most servers I will go to the end of the line for my next questions thanx EmptySpace -- good question! you might as well ask your next question now thank you for clarifying :) yes, anneH, that makes sense. I understand. ok... [2] Is there a work around to get spacing between lines equal? For example when using Initial Caps. I've read about some workarounds using clear 1 pixel gif images, but I haven't been able to get it to work. Do you have any idea what I'm talking about? r u talking vertical spacing? yes Who   If the very first letter of a paragraph is a larger size then the whole line looks off will add spaces horizontally : ) Usually you have to play around with it -- sometimes and extra
will help oh, great Zonie... I will try that   is for horizontal spacing not vertical for instance to indent a sentence or move something over How big is your first letter compared to the rest of the sentence? Yes, Otter, thank you. Is there a way to 'close' the gap vertically, rather than add exta space to *every* line? Otter, a couple of points, 5 - 3 could use a Table and align small text bottom in second cell Are you talking about like a LARGE first char of a Paragraph? Like in old fashioned fairy tale books? yes Who That is usually a gif...not a character I think I would just use it in the "first" line of each paragraph because there is more space there for it Zonie, yes It looked like tables might do something... when we get to it Find a page that looks like what you want and VIEW SOURCE yes Who... exactly if it's in the middle of a paragraph -- Tables might work
    LARGE LETTERsmall text
could be a gif or a character But i would guess its a gif with the text wrapped around it probably : ) for examples of the ALIGN feature of the IMG SRC tag check here . next to last part flfry is F L F R Y all in lowercase no spaces http://members.xoom.com/flfry/TQFK/imgalgn.html Mirror site at http://The-Zone.webjump.com/TQFK/imgalgn.html well these are all good suggestions, I will play around with it. * Granny-Wicked says now that is a great information site!! Zonie, your color code comes out all garbled for me send us some URL to look at if you need more help hit reload again and try it next to last part flfry is F L F R Y all in lowercase no spaces sorry : ) that is what the color coded area says I have one last very simple, practically stupid, question [3] What exactly is an attribute? Where is it used? it confused me a bit It is used in the tag to describe what the graphic image is like Font Size size is an attribute here is another url that works nicely in conjunction with zonies on aligning text and images http://www.pacific.net/~chrisk/graphics/b06mn20.htm Border is an atribute so does it refer to both images and text? actually -- simply put -- it describes what ever is in the main isn't *every* thing an attribute? any tag, some have attributes and some do not no -- some are tags tag would be <=== don't get the difference attributes would describe how the tag should be read by the browser Example attributes are add in information, options = tag Isee. that helps * Granny-Wicked says used for blind peoples reader programs BGCOLOR = attribute it tells the of the page what color to make the background ok EmptySpace -- Shouldn't bgcolor be in brackets? should be in the body tag * Granny-Wicked says use it in the body tag guest teriffic...thanks to all guest -- bgcolor is inside of the opening tag is a tag -- BGCOLOR is the attribute done now... finally :) then you just keep adding others in the same body tag to set LINK VLINK TEXT etc all separated by a space ok -- on to Shasta -- do you have a question? here are some attributes for the body tag yes, Zonie... becoming more clear I'm confused about the Lesson instructions on the CLEAR attribute for
with images. [1]Does that attribute go in
at the end of a line with an image in it, or where? Also, [2]can the CLEAR attribute be used in the

tag as well? zonie, I have never seen using FONT FACE in the body tag before, are you sure about that? sets the default font face for the page is usually a separate TAG
would clear any alignments you made above it any time you set font to something else then turn it off, it gos back to that "sets the default font face for the page" Good tip Zonie Text is an attribute that will set the color for the page unless changed with CLEAR is still unclear. :) if you had a gif aligned right and did not turn it off, then everything after might also appear aligned right and you would not know why BRB you need to turn it off with
    supposedly if you used

    then using a closing

would turn off the alignment and the next would appear as default « anneH »: In the lesson, this attribute is referred to in mixing text and images on the same line. It LOOKS like what they mean is, to clear the text away from the right of a "left aligned" image, use the BR CLEAR RIGHT right, that is what it is referring to no wait, that is not what I meant if you want the text to wrap around the image instead of clearing it !number 4000 z-MaryA : The Number 4000 you guess is too High ! if your image is aligned LEFT which is the default you did not have any reference to align it RIGHT what is this wrap aroung text mean? the alignment is really confusing at first to figure out what happens, guest -- what we are discussing is the placement of text and images -- it's in lesson 2-1 * Granny-Wicked says yes I agree with anneH's statement! the best way is to play with it Flamingo -- experiment -- it doesn't always work for me and takes a while to figure it out!!! yep * Granny-Wicked says yeap experiment is the answer anymore questions Flamingo? if you use ALIGN="RIGHT" the graphic will appear on the right side and text will start and appear on the left side of the image Duh, I'm feeling STOOpid. OK, I'll play like I usually do to learn. These words are making no sense to me....trial and error is the TICKET! nope nothing more at the moment oh ya...one that's what a lot of web design is Flamingo -- trial and error!!! :) tombstone technology : ) I guess like in everything else you want to learn it is "practice, practice.." different monitor resolutions will have text appear at different places so you always want to use
images have a way of jumping all over the place at first re:
.....I understand the intent. But what's the point...doesn't one have to retype
the original text anyway? Or is this tag used to make copy/paste possible? or what?
I get very light yellow which I cannot tell from the backgroung of this chat page.
How do I chat color of this chat page?
or clean off page : )
guest87162: what are you using? mirc or chat room through vu?
yes Flamingo -- if you have written a poem and don't want to retype it with
after each line -- you can use the
     tag set
     chat room
if you had lots of indents in the original text you typed,
     would show it this way
and you also do not need to put
before each separate line thoese are messages from the server on the Java Applet ignore them Ok saves on   too : ) OK I understand now. it will show exactly as you pasted it the font that it appears in will look somewhat different though OK -- great questions You can change the font don't think you can chage font in a
     tag, don't know though: )
     just use tag after the
will have to try someday : )
put on my "later" list : )
it still looks different if you use it with font than the same text on the page that might use the
    same font tho
I've done it Zonie -- it works!!!!
     without using
     cool : )
     what kind of different, anneH?
no Anne -- you can get it to look the same with the same setting after the
that you use on the rest of the page
     i think usually
uses a monospace font, probably whatever is default in your browser
hmmm, I was working on one of the lessons for HTML 2 and it does not print the same
     way
and the look is a little different than the ones done without the
I assume that if the preformatted text was a font the browser can't read, it won't
come through in that original way?
     true
again, best way is to try it and see how it comes out
so all it's really about is spacing, then, ya think?
Class is officially over but you all can hang out for a bit -- don't forget to remove your
     z's from your names
what are the screen resolutions each of you have?
     lol who!!
yes Flamingo -- just a different way to set up your text
« Zonie »: now will you tell me what SRC means in the IMG tag?
     emptyspace mine is 1024x768
Flamingo...PRE is usually used to keep line breaks where you want them
     source
     i have 640x480 monitor
     FLAM: SRC is source....
     how many colors?
     <=== taking a survey
     mine is 256 colors
empty space true color 24 bit
good to know Anne, for images
mine is set to 640 x 480 true color (24 bit) EmptySpace -- but I change it when doing web
pages to see how the colors work
     and how the text fits
yes, Otter... I found a background gif I adore
but it doesn't show up to well with 256 color
it always amazes me how colors can be so different on different monitors
That can be a problem EmptySpace -- depends how bad it looks and how important it is to
    the whole page
my friend on a mac sees a color as pure white that is more of a cream on my monitor
    * Granny-Wicked says not only that anne H but different isp's do different color too I hear
oh that is interesting about different ISPs too
    * Granny-Wicked say aol colors are different and use browser safe colors?
    * Kayroller you should see what aol does with colors
Everyone uses different browsers, settings, computers -- and you will never please them
all -- just go for the majority!!! :)
     I agree otter!!1
someone sent me a screen shot of one of my sites on AOL --- sheeesh!!!!!
when you have more variation in colors using your true bit color, the 256 color just will not
    show them all for sure
