Users

Function

The Users button on the Status Bar launches a tool to perform various kinds of user-related operations.

The Users tool when invoked, looks like this:

There is a checkbox option to show either just user IDs or user names as well. A radiobutton option toggles between all users of the system and only logged-on users. This picture shows all users. Selecting only logged-on users for display is like typing who on the command line. The current user is shown highlighted as soon as the tool pops up, eliminating the need to type who am i. (The uid and effective uid could both be shown, in different columns, but I haven't shown them separately here.)

Right-clicking on a user in the list pops up a set of options, as shown below:

The following operations are possible:

  1. Create a new user (available only to root)
  2. Delete this user (available only to root)
  3. Change password (available only to the owner)
  4. Delete this user's password (available only to root)
  5. General information about a user (finger)
  6. Group Membership (information from /etc/passwd)
  7. Home Directory (calls up the Directory Navigator with the user's home directory selected by default)
  8. Mail to (calls an e-mail program)
  9. Impersonate (su)
  10. Log off (available only to root)
