The Family PC
What's that?
Unix is multi-user, and the average family is multi-member, right? So families
should be working on Unix machines instead of fighting for time on single-user
PCs, right? Is it just because of the interface that this isn't so?
Well, a Unix GUI will hopefully remove that
reason, but there are still some technical issues to be sorted out.
Issues
- We need one monitor, one mouse and one keyboard per user, but not one
CPU per user. That would make it a PC LAN, and what we need is just a
multi-user computer. Does the PC architecture support this?
- Does the X Window system allow this architecture?
- Can we modify the "thin-client" model so that local devices like CD-ROMs
are supported?
How does it look?
Here:
If you think there's some way we could do this, let's get to work on it
as quickly as possible. There's only a small window of opportunity
before Microsoft-Intel release such a machine with a multi-user OS and
seal their domination of the world.

I used to have a Hotmail account, but gave it up after it was taken over by
the Evil Empire :-(.
