Book Review
By: John Wendt WA6BFH
Title: | The Foundation Trilogy | Author: |
Isaac Asimov |
International Standard Book Number: (ISBN)
Library of Congress Card Number:
This book like most of Asimov's books is about far more than a compelling science
fiction yarn. Its narrative follows the statistical activities begun by Harry Seldon and Gaal
Dornick, and their development of "psychohistory". Psychohistory defines
and predicts the de-evolution of the known and unknown universe, and all of its
technologic standing and development. At this point you might want to consider that he
wrote this book in 1951, when Harry Truman's brand of politics was rife in our country!
Harry Seldon predicts how the fall of the Galactic Empire will take place, and how
through the analytic use of psychohistory, it can be brought back from this brink of
ultimate destruction.
This book, "Foundation" and the subsequent editions that follow
tell an "Atlas Shrugged" sort of story that, as that book has very adeptly
described, is now quite evident in our present. You will see while reading this book not
only that Mr. Asimov was quite perceptive, he was describing to a tee the later
developments of Chernobyl, the MIR Space Station, NASA, the Challenger incident, and
a number of very curious corollaries. If you have any training or knowledge base in the
use of statistics, you will find it even more interesting! For any reader though it's a fine
and powerful story!
