1. Pallet Town

This is where you start the game. Go downstairs and your mother will tell you that Prof. Oak wants to see you. When you're done searching around, try leaving town via the Northern exit. Prof. Oak will then come and get you, and he'll lead you to his lab where you will be able choose your first Pokémon. There is Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Your Pokémon selection here will set difficulty for the game in a way. Bulbasaur is easiest since it's a good fighter, while Squirtle fight well at all. Your rival, <whatever you name him>, will pick up the Pokémon to the right of yours. When you try to leave, your rival will challenge you to a Pokémon duel. Dont worry if you lose: your rival's Pokémon is always stronger than yours.

2. Viridian City

Talk to the shop clerk and then head back to Pallet Town with the parcel that he gives you. Give it to Prof. Oak and he will give you and your rival each a Pokédex, which is an electronic encyclopedia. Your goal in the game is to capture or have captured every Pokémon in the game. The gym's doors are locked, and they wont unlock until you've beaten the other 7 trainers in the game.

3. Viridian Forest

On your way through Viridian Forest, you should pick up a Pikachu, a Caterpie and a Weedle. To save having to evolve your Caterpie and Weedle, capture a Metapod and a Kakuna as well and evolve them instead. To easily evolve them, have either Metapod or Kakuna as your first Pokémon during battle, and as your first move, switch to another Pokémon that can fight. That way, your Metapod or Kakuna will always get shared Experience Points. Metapod turns into Butterfree and Kakuna into Beedrill. There are two easy trainers in the forest that your should have no trouble beating.
Note: Come back to the road between Viridian Forest and Pweter City when you have a Pokémon who has the Cut ability. To reach the left side of the road, cut the bush. You can get a Mr. Mime by trading an Abra for it at a cottage.

4. Pewter City

This is where Brock lives. At his command are Onix and Geodude, two rock-type Pokémon. Old Amber is in the museum. In order to enter the side of the museum, you need to cut a bush with the cut ability. Old Amber will become an Aerodactyl when you take it to the Pokémon Laboratory on Cinnabar Island. Before you go into Mount Moon, go to the Pokémon Centre near the entrance and find the man that will give you a Magikarp for $500.

5. Mount Moon

Here you can get one of two fossils. You can choose the Helix or the Dome Fossil. The Helix Fossil will become Omanyte and the Dome Fossil will become Kabuto when you take them to the Pokémon Laboratory on Cinnabar Island. There are a lot of Team Rocket trainers here too so beware cause they are tougher than normal trainers.

6. Cerulean City

In this city you can trade your Poliwhirl for a Jynx in one of the houses. You can also get the Bike here once the President of the Pokémon Fan Club in Vermillion City has given you the Bike Voucher. The trainer here is Misty. She has a Staryu and a Starmie. Beat her and head North to Bill's house. Here you will get the S.S. Anne ticket from Bill after you turn him into a human again. Before you leave, ask him if you can see his computer again, and this time you will be able to see pictures of four rare Pokémon that will be added to your Pokédex. On the road South from Cerulean city, there is a house. This is the Pokémon Daycare centre. The man there will care for one of your Pokémon and raise it a level while you are gone. At the end of the road there is a big building which is a gate house to Saffron City. At this point, the guard will not let you through. You must get some Fresh Water from the Pokémart in Celadon City. The smaller building is the entrance of the underground passage to Vermilion City.

7. Vermilion City

Here you can get the coupon for the Bike in Cerulean City by visiting the Pokémon Fan Club. Also there is a house in the city where you can trade a Pidgey for a Farfetch'd. In the house to the left of the Pokémon Centre, there is a man who will give you an Old Rod that you can use to go fishing. When you get to the Gym, beat Lt. Surge, the gym leader. He uses Voltorb, Pikachu and Raichu. Its best to use a ground-type Pokémon against his electric ones. Talk to him afterwards to get the TM24 which contains ThunderBolt. ThunderBolt is the best electric move.

8. S.S. Anne

You can get on the boat with the S.S. Ticket you got from Bill. On this boat, there are many trainers and some useful items. The most important one of them all is HM 01. This teaches one of your Pokémon the Cut ability. The Captain will give this to you when you give him help with his seasickness. You should get HM 01 after you have got everything else because the boat will take off when you get the HM 01 and exit the boat. you will have to face Gary on the boat as well, so make sure that you have a few Potions in stock to recharge your Pokémon.

9. Vermilion City

Go east (dont go into the cave just yet)and you will find a building on the right side of the road. One of Prof. Oak's aides is on the 2nd floor. He will give you the Itemfinder if you currently have more than 30 Pokémon. To get to Diglett's Cave, just go back a bit and you will see the cave that you went past earlier, this is Diglett's Cave.

10. Diglett's Cave

This leads to the road near Pewter City. Be sure to pick up a Diglett while you are in the cave. When you get back to Viridian Forest, look for another of Prof. Oak's aides he will have the HM 05 which will teach a Pokémon the Flash ability.

11. Cerulean City

Go East and cut your way through. Go all the way East and then South making sure to beat all the trainers in the way. You will then see the Rock Tunnel. Make sure to visit the Pokémon Centre before entering though.

12. Rock Tunnel

Its gonna be dark in here so use a Pokémon with the Flash ability to light up the tunnel. This is where you can get an Onix and a Machop. Keep away from them bloody Zubat.

13. Lavender Town

In the NorthEast section there is a big building, Pokémon Tower. In order to identify and fight the ghosts in the tower, you need the Silph Scope which you can get in the basement of the Game Corner in Celadon City after you defeat Giovanni. Come back to Lavender Town when you have the Silph Scope. In the town there is a house where you can change the names of your Pokémon.

14. Celadon City

Celadon City is the biggest city in the whole game. You will need to come here many times. You can get an Eevee by the way of a back entrance to the Game Freak Inc. Building. Use a stone from the Pokémart to evolve him to Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon. The Gym Leader here is Erica. She has Plant type Pokémon so fire Pokémon are best against her. Beat Erica and recieve the TM that contains the best Plant Attack.

15. Celadon Department Store

Here you can buy many items including stones that will evolve your Pokémon, TMs, ability enhancers, etc. Make sure you save money from all the trainer battles that you have fought. You should evolve all your Pokémon through the stones. On the roof level pick up 2 Fresh Waters, 1 Soda Pop and 1 Lemonade. Give one of each to the thirsty girl and she will give you 3 TMs.

16. Game Corner

You can play the slot machines here, but you need Coin Case and coins to play a slot machine. Some of the people playing will give you coins. You can also buy coins, 50 of them for $1000. Also, walk around hitting the "A" button and you will find more coins (scattered on the floor, but you just cant see them). The basement of the Game Corner is Team Rocket's hideout. Giovanni, the boss of Team Rocket, has the Slith Scope. You will need it to make your way through Pokémon Tower. You can get TMs and Pokémon by trading in your coins at the Prize Exchange.
