Is Your Hair a Fire Hazard?

Matthew Sisson and his Brylcreem.Hair will burn, if ignited, but certain hair grooming products can make hair more flammable.  Here's an example.

An article in the British newspaper, the Weekly Telegraph (Issue 388, December 30, 1999) titled "Brylcreem boy banned as 'fire risk' describes the plight of a 14 year old school boy in England who was suspended from school for using Brylcreem.  Trinity School in Aspley, Notts, deemed Matthew Sisson's hair to be a fire hazard in science lessons.  When Matthew refused to stop using Brylcreem, he was suspended from school after three warnings.  The school had banned chemical hair products some years ago after a hair burning incident during a science class.

The article quotes Matthew as saying "I've got a neat, short hairacut and just wear the cream because it keeps it in place."  A picture of Matthew shows that he has a regular boy's haircut, a couple of inches in length on top, and short and neat around the ears - a classic, combed-forward haircut that is very popular these days.
