Overcome Those Cold Feet

OK. So you decide to try a short new style. You know what you want and you are looking forward to the new style. But then, while you are waiting, or as you get in the chair, you lose your nerve. The barber asks what you want and you say "just a trim please". Depressing, isn't it?

Here's an experience sent in by Gary giving you some good reasons for not losing your nerve.

I am relaying this story that happened to me between my graduation from high school and entrance into college. It was a very hot summer and I felt that I wanted to try a different hairstyle. I should point out that I have very fine, straight hair that styles pretty easily.

I decided to pay a visit to the local barber shop one day; it is a shop that's been in my home town since I was little. I decided to try a new style - a crewcut. I walked in and the only barber there was busy with another customer. I sat down to wait. Several other people came in after me and also sat down. It was the middle of the week, so it was not too busy. When the barber finished his customer, he paid and left. The barber looked over and asked who was next.

I started to get cold feet (as I noticed several readers also claim) and the gentleman next to me indicated I was next. I got up and went over to the chair. He put his cape around me and then proceeded to ask what I would like. I swallowed, hard, and asked for a crewcut. I believe he set his attachment for number two. He immediately started to cut my long fine hair off.

He started at the back of my head, so results were not immediately visible. I only really noticed when he started to cut the crown. All of the sudden my hair, which was then about 4 or 5 inches long, was replaced by fuzzy short hair. The difference was astounding! He quickly finished up the cut and then he asked as I got up if "I wanted a doggy bag" for all the hair. I paid him and left.

The rest of the day, I just felt by bristly scalp. It felt wonderful! I took a shower and noted the incredible difference! And one notices the wind and rain and all sorts of thing one did not notice before. I'd never really thought about how good a cool breeze felt until I had a head of short hair.

I have kept the style for a good long time. It is not difficult to maintain and it feels terrific. I hope this letter can help other people who have "cold feet" to overcome their anxiety and cut their hair short!
