Arizona
Mirror Barber
Shop
226 N. Broad Street Globe, Arizona 85501
Phone: (520) 425-2445
The Mirror Barber Shop is the oldest in the state of Arizona. Paul and
Jeanette Johnson bought the place and are intent on restoring the shop.
Paul's shop is very modern with many conveniences, including an electric
chair and a database holding his customers' exact requirements, but have
managed to hold onto the 'old look' with their 1927 Emil J. Paidar chairs
and original beveled mirrors which gave the shop it's name.
The shop is a walk-in shop and Paul is very skilled in what he does.
I've never received a bad haircut from him.
Thanks to the reader who sent this contribution.
Bel-View
N 24th Street, Phoenix, AZ.
About a half block soutth of Vic's barber shop (listed below) on N. 24th
Street, however, I'd noticed another old fashioned shop. It's the Bel-View
Barbershop and looks like it's been there for thirty or more years.
Very traditional inside, too -- with one exception -- the two barbers are
now thirty something females. Susan, the apparent owner, and Jackie,
her partner, both are adept with the straight razor -- always do outlines
unless requested otherwise. All varieties of short cuts. Susan,
on request, gave me a very good horseshoe flat using the edger. Price
of cut, $9. But the kicker is that she will do both facial shaves
and shaved HT -- but, problem, PRICE. To do either she wants another
$18!! Still, in this world of the vanishing razor shave, I figured
someone might be interested.

Vic's
Corner of N 24th Street and Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ.
I was heading out to Phoenix, a couple weeks back, for rodeo. Got
to exchanging some messages with a local who was passing on questionably
reliable info from a friend. This, as you'll see is the shop
I didn't try, because I didn't have confirmation.
Vic's. It's at the corner of N 24th Street and Indian School Road.
In a strip center on the south side of Indian School and the west side
of N 24th Street. The scuttlebutt was that the shop did razor shaved
high and tights. However, when I did check it out, there was nothing
of the sort in evidence, and one of the barbers really appeared weak and
feeble. So, I didn't give it a try. Since then, my correspondent,
however, has confirmed his info with his buddy. Can't tell ya how
they'd do with a shaved HT, but at least they are apparently willing.

A traditional barber shop that has been providing haircuts in Tuscon since
1957. Walk-ins or appointments. Five barbers. All are quite good with flattops.

the ears. All haircuts are $8.00. They also provide facial shaves with

Johnny
Gibson,
53 N. Sixth Avenue, Tuscon, AZ.
No listing of Tucson barbers could be complete without mention of Tucson's
most famous and beloved barber shop, Johnny Gibson's, winner of The Tucson
Weekly's "Best Barber" in its "Best of Tucson" picks. I don't consider
myself worthy of describing the significance of the man or his barber shop;
all I can say is I've always received a top-quality taper cut from the
various barbers. I also leave the following link:

California (Northern)
Caramagno's Barber Shop
2018 University Ave, Berkeley, CA 94704
Phone: (510) 845-1592
The following recommendation was posted on the Hairnet Hotline. "This Barbershop
has been serving the university at Berkeley area for some time and is very
familiar with modern and classic flattops and the service is awesome."
Jack's Barber Shop
1012 Oak Grove, Burlingame, CA 94010
Phone: (650) 342-1602
A Buzztown visitor sums up this barber shop by saying "Great flattops!
Jack does an excellent job making sure that your sides are square and straight
up the sides. Needless to say, the top is perfectly flat. He also does
exactly what you ask from whitewalling the sides to leaving it longer for
those less daring."
Jesse's Barber Shop
21 N. 1st Street Campbell, CA 95008
Phone: (408) 364-2077
Jesse is a nice young guy who took over this three-chair shop in 1996 and
runs it as a one-man business. I asked him how short he thought I could
get my hair cut, and he recommended a flattop. When I said that barbers
had always told me that they couldn't do a flattop with my fairly fine
and thinning hair, he said "I don't believe they told you that. Your should
get a great flattop. Let's just prove them wrong." I gave him the go-ahead,
and he gave me a careful, perfectly shaped cut - 1/8" on the sides, 1/2"
on top - and trimmed around the ears with shave cream and a straight razor.
He charges $10 and deserves more. After years of nervous wondering, I'm
real happy with Jesse's work.
Ken's Barber Shop
3106 Del Monte Blvd., Marina, CA 93933
Phone: (408) 384-1951
Shop hours: Tuesday thru Saturday
Fort Ord was located in Marina (a few miles north of Monterey) until the
past year. The barber at Ken's Barber Shop has a lot of experience with
flattops and short hair. Cuts are in the $8 range. Recently flattopped
Buzztown visitor Bill says that this barber "hasn't cut my flat top yet,
but I seen many results while I was waiting in my former longer hair days".
Dave and Ray's Barber Shop
1571 El Camino Real, Millbrae, CA 94030
Phone: (650) 877-9479
According to the guy who sent in details of this shop, you should "ask
for Ray who is the barber by the window. Ray has a great personality and
does great flattops, high and tights, and is one of the few barbers who
will actually shave your head with shaving cream and a razor. Ray is somehow
able to get your head smoother than you can shave it yourself!"
Another Buzztown reader wrote in to say that he visited Dave and Ray's
Barber Shop. Ray was not in the shop. The guy wrote that "Dave gave me
a haircut, and while it looks nice enough - it's defninitely NOT the "extremely
short Marine high & tight" that I asked for.... Instead it's a #2 on
top and #1A on the sides and back."
The guy had really wanted to see Ray, and he was not there. Does anyone
know which days Ray works there (and if he is still at this shop)? Maybe
Ray's your man if you want it very short and Dave's your man for a good
cut but with little extra length.
Tony's
Abrego Street, Monterey, CA
There is a great shop on Abrego St. in Monterey, CA. across from Denny's
Restaurant called Tony's. He used to cut military hair in Fort Ord (an
army base) before it closed down. Great price, great cuts! It is a definite
stop for short-hair enthusiasts. He buzzed me down good many times!! Great
buzzcuts for $7.
Thanks to MIKE in San Francisco.
President Barbershop
490 University Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94301
Phone: (650) 325-5229
Shop hours: Mon. thru Fri. 8-6; Sat. 8-5; Closed Sunday
"An excellent four chair, traditional barber shop with great atmosphere
in downtown Palo Alto, near Stanford University. Very classy - the barbers
all wear neck-ties and I have never seen more effort to ensure that you
don't walk away with any stray cut hairs on your face, neck, ears or clothes.
The barbers at this family-run shop are masters with the clippers and do
superb tapering. Plenty of great short cuts (from businessmen's cuts to
extra-short cuts) walk out of this shop. The barbers are precise and thorough.
They make sure that they understand what you want, they are happy to give
advice and will make sure that you are happy with the cut. The price of
a regular cut is $14 (plus tip, which should probably be generous, given
the quality of the cut). Although that may seem expensive, it is about
average, or only slightly above average, for a traditional barber shop
in this area. The only thing that would make this shop better is
if they offered shaving or hot razor outlining."
Haircuts and More
2112 El Camino Ave. Sacramento, CA
Phone: (916) 922-2675
Here's one for clipper fans in Sacramento, California. Tammy is the owner
and the only haircutter right now. She is excellent with the clippers and
is not bashful using them. Tammy uses the big Osters and really makes the
hair roll down the cape. She like to cut hair short and will go as short
as you like. Four stars!
Thanks to the reader who sent this recommendation.
Ahmet's Barber & Hairstyling
201 Sacramento Street, San Francisco, CA 94111
Phone: (415) 788-1919
"Mr. Ahmet always cuts my hair! Every time he cuts my hair, I walk out
with the same precision cut. His barber shop is located downtown San Francisco
next to the Embarcadero, one of the most beautiful area's of the city.
Any visitor should stop by and say hello to Ahmet...he is a great character
and knows a lot about the city. Haircuts are excellent and he can do any
type of haircut, also he gives me very nice close shaves just like in the
old days. Every time I get up from his chair, I feel like a brand new man.
My co-workers are always complimenting me on my haircuts. I never tell
them my secret, Mr. Ahmet!"
Toni's Barbershop
46 6th Street, San Francisco, CA
(415) 626-1567
"Last week I was in San Francisco and found an excellent barbershop where
I got an excellent haircut. The name of the shop is Toni's Barbershop.
It is located at 46 6th Street, near to the Civic Center. The owner (Toni)
is an old man and he uses the clippers very gently and quickly and will
do exactly what you ask. If you are in doubt (like me) he could show you
photos of other customers and you can choose what you want to go. He doesn't
cut more than you ask but if you want, he can go very, very short. They're
open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Toni is the guy in the second chair (center)
and he will ask you if you want a photo to put in his portfolio. It was
my first experience in the US and it was very good.
Thanks to Carlos for this shop recommendation.
Resetar Barber Shop
465 Main Street Watsonville, CA 95076
Phone: (408) 728-8987
Recently I went to The Resetar Barbershop in Watsonville CA. My great uncle
worked there for years but I never went because my Mom always cut my hair.
I was just walking by and thought what the heck and walked in and a chair
was open. I sat down and a young barber (about 25 years old) put a cape
on me and said how do you want it cut? I asked him for a high n'tight and
after explaining what that was he gave me the best haircut I have
ever gotten! He didn't use shaving cream and razor on the sides and back
but I did not ask him to. I will next time. He only charged 9 bucks!
By the way he said everyone calls him "Doza". I highly recommend Doza
at the Resetar Barber Shop!

California (Southern)
Big Ed's Barber Shop
River Blvd., Bakersfield, CA
Shop hours: Tues thru Fri. 4:30am-4pm
Ed has been cutting hair longer than I've been alive (35 yrs). He
can cut ANY short cut you want, and
flawlessly. You also get an electric shoulder massage at the
end of your cut. Ed is very fast too. Jess is
newer but does a very respectable job on the flattop.
Hank's Barber Shop
2260 Ventura Blvd., Camarillo, CA 93010
Phone: (805) 388-8955
Shop hours: Mon. 8-4, Tues. thru Fri. 8-7:30, Sat. 7-5; Closed Sunday
Thanks to the reader who sent in details of this Southern Californian barber.
The reader went with his brother to Hank's Barber Shop. Hank, who owns
the shop, is a young latino barber. The shop is open on Mondays, which
is unusual for California (and many other areas of the US). The reader's
brother asked Hank if a flattop would suit him. Hank said that he could
give the guy a great loooking flattop. Half an hour later, the guy was
sporting a great looking flattop.
Update from another reader: Hank, who is the owner of the barber
shop, keeps the shop open on Sunday and Monday by himself. Haircuts are
$13. Hank will shave over the ears and neck with a straight razor if requested.
Also, will shave the sides and back for a nice high and tight. And although
I've never done it, Hank told me that he has a few customers that come
in for total head shaves. So the razor and lather are no problem at this
barbershop. Hank's a great barber whatever your haircut. Prefer Hank to
the other barbers, some of which provide more salon services than barbershop
haircuts.
Crown Barber Shop,
947 Orange Avenue Coronado, CA 92118
Phone: (619) 435-8637
The following review of this San Diego-area barber shop was sent in by
a Buzztown visitor:
Located in main business district close to the largest Navy Base and
Navy Seal base on the West Coast. Clientel is 80% military. Male and female
barbers. Open 7 days. Fairly busy almost all the time-waits are fun.($10.00)
Awesome fades, high and tights and flattops. They can and will do any
type of cut, but IF you've got the guts they've got the clippers! I couldn't
believe how close the barbers could go and yet do perfect fades and blending.
Talk about your "five o'clock shadow" haircut! Most of the military guys
waiting for a cut barely had enough stubble to cut! As an added bonus the
barbers all use straight razors for edging, shaving sides and back and
total shaves (as requested of course). Maggie is excellent (chair toward
back), two male barbers (both quite tall) at the center chairs also pump
out nice work. Don't miss this one-FIVE STARS!!!!!
Luis' Barber Shop
16124 1/2 Crenshaw Blvd., Gardena, CA
Phone: (310) 323-0317
I would like to recommend a barber shop to add to your current listing.
The barber shop is called Luis' Barber Shop. It is a one man shop and Luis
specializes in crewcuts, fades and flattops. The shop is located in Gardena
California (Southern California). Luis is located right across the street
from El Camino College so he is use to cutting very short hair styles.

Phone: (323) 466-1215
In eastern Hollywood go see Damiano at Crazycuts in the minimall on Western
and Santa Monica, accross the street from Ritmo Latino (where latin Cds
cost a little less than they do at Tower) for $10 dollars. Damian gives
the best fades for $8 for $10 he will spend up to 40 minutes shaving your
head, however much you need. You also get a "champou" for this price. ¡Damiano
es el peluquero el más trabajador en el mundo! Damiano is the most
hard working barber in the universe. He doesn't spoeak much English though,
but his cohorts do and are happy to help translate. Haircutting is an international
language anyhow.
Andy's Barbershop
4639 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90027
Phone: (213) 667-9690
Shop hours: Open until 5pm Tues - Sat.
"This shop does all types of short and buzzed haircuts. Flattops, crewcuts,
high'n'tights, etc. The best barber is the first chair as you enter the
shop. I've gotten three haircuts there, all by him. An excellent high'n'tight
with #.0000, a crewcut, and a full buzz all over with #1.5. I highly recomend
this barber."
Thanks to William
for his recommendation of this barber shop in Hollywood. He says that he
would be happy to answer any questions you may have about this shop and
barber.
Update (Feb 9, 1998):
I went to Andy's Barber Shop in Hollywood and got "the guy nearest the
window." He did a great job, took a lot of time, also used a straight razor
and it was really cheap. (Also right next door are a couple of good used
clothing stores.) They didn't know that that they could be found on the
Internet. I'm glad I made this find thanks to Buzztown.
Crossroads Barber Shop
12317 La Mirada Blvd, La Mirada, CA 90638
Phone: (310) 941-9027
This barber shop in south Los Angeles county was recommended on the Hairnet
Hotline. The guy posting the recommendation hasn't had his hair cut there,
but he has received email saying that "the young Latino guys in the first
three chairs can do excellent flattops".
Another Hairnet read, Mark G, posted a message on the hotline saying
that he had the best flattop he's ever had at this shop. His comments are:
"Just wanted to tell all of you that I went to Crossroads barbershop in
La Mirada, CA. yesterday. I had seen several posts about it and thought
I would give it a try. They have 7 barbers all but one with short haircuts.
Its so busy you have to take a number when you walk in. After I sat down
and looked around everyone in the shop was getting really short haircuts.
At one point I thought maybe I should get up and leave since I didn't want
mine cut as short as what was happening in the chairs. Just as I was about
to leave they called my number. Glad I didn't leave because Eddie gave
me the best Flattop I have ever had . These guys know what they are doing.
If your looking for a good short haircut I recommend them strongly. They
use lather if you want the sides shaved, and they always use the clippers
on you."
Another satisfied customer from this shop also sent a recommendation.
"I got a flattop from Eddie, who was specifically recommended by another
poster on Hairnet, and the haircut was excellent - the best flattop I've
gotten in the area and I probably will stick with him for a while."
Update: The good comments about this shop keep coming. A Buzztown
visitor wrote "I got a flattop from Eddie, who was specifically recommended
by another poster on Hairnet, and the haircut was excellent--the best flattop
I've gotten in the area and I probably will stick with him for a while."

Red Clipper Barber Shop
1979 Oceanside Blvd., Oceanside, CA 92054
Phone: (760) 757-7977
This listing comes from a discussion on the Hairnet Hotline. The message
posted by Jack on the hotline said "They obviously cater to Marines, judging
by thier military discounts ($4!--what at deal, $6-$8 for civilians, depending
on flattop or regular cut) and decor (they had guns and a USMC coat-of-arms
on the wall)."
Stud Cuts
210 N Freeman St, Oceanside, CA 92054
Phone: (760) 721-9009
Shop hours: Mon. thru Thu. 9am-9pm; Fri.&Sat. 9am-8pm; Sun. 8:30am-9:30pm
This
is just about the ultimate Marine Corps barbershop. There are about 12
chairs--more like stylist chairs than traditional barber chairs--and the
barbers are all female, as the name would imply. But this is definitely
a barber shop that caters to the Marine Corps. They have amazingly extended
hours to accomodate the military clientele.
The barbers are all young and attractive females, and they do all buzzcuts.
My major beef with female barbers is that they are shy with the clippers
and won't go ultra-short, but because these female barbers serve almost
exclusively a military clientele, they will go as short as you want. I
went there to get a horseshoe flattop and got a fantastic haircut from
Kendra. Another barber, Mandy, was recommended to me (she was not there
when I went), and I have been told that she, and others, will do razor
shaves on the sides and back. The price list is set up to accomodate regulation
haircuts with military discounts, and, as I say, they seem to do nothing
but ultra-short styles. They also provide an interesting service: a "rinse"
over the shampoo basin after a buzz cut to get rid of loose stubble.
The shop itself seems like a barbershop (even though the walls are adorned
with framed portraits of Elvis and Madonna rather than, say, a deer head
trophy) but it is perhaps the most comfortable barbershop I've found. There
are three huge, incredibly cushy couches arranged around a big screen TV
(never seen that before). The magazine selection includes Playboy and tattoo
magazines, so these lady barbers definitely know how to please their Marine
customers. I suppose that the fact that the barbers are women detracts
from the traditional barbershop experience--male bonding, guy talk, etc.--but
if you're primarily interested in a good short haircut, this shop is highly
recommendable. Despite the fact that the barbers are all young women and
not old men, this is definitely a barbershop and not a salon.
Thanks to the long-term Buzztowner who wrote this review.
Top Hat Barber and Beauty Shop
1349 E 4th St, Ontario, CA 91764
Phone: (909) 984-9913
A message posted by "Amazed" on the Hairnet Hotline recommended this shop.
The barber who did a "phenominal flattop" was Becky and the guy said that
it was the best flattop he's ever had, and it only cost $10 with tip.
Gil's Barbershop
18146 Sherman Way, Reseda, CA 91335
Phone: (818) 705-9913
Another recommendation from the Hairnet Hotline. Jack, who posted the message
says that the recommendation is specifically for Wayne at Gil's
Barbershop, in the San Fernando Valley. Jack has been disatisfied with
other barbers at the large shop. He recommends Wayne "to those not quite
ready for whitewalling. He is very good with shape, though wouldn't get
as close as I wanted".
Pickwick Barber & Beauty Salon
138 W. Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101
Phone: (619) 696-9808
Ty, sent this information about a barber shop in San Diego where he had
one of the best haircuts he's ever had. Although he doesn't usually go
to a female barber, he says that this woman is "absolutely extraordinary".
In his words "I was walking down the street and saw a half-dozen or so
Marines in there getting their high-and-tights tightened, so I gave her
a try and it was just extraordinary. She apparently really has a lot of
experience with the military clientele in San Diego. I believe they have
a $5 special on Tuesday; otherwise it's still less than $10 (I can't remember
exactly). I told her to give me a high-and-tight just like the last Marine
and it was the best haircut I've ever had. I also know she does flattops
well because I watched her give one to one of the Marines. I don't know
the lady's name but she is the only one who works on Saturdays, so if you
go then, you'll be sure to get her (I think they get some female clients
during the week, but Saturdays are dominated by Marines whose ship just
docked in San Diego Harbor)."

Phone: (310) 534-9836
In response to a message on the Hairnet Hotline asking for a barber shop
in Southern California that would do a good horseshoe flattop, this shop
was recommended. According to the contributor it is "a one man shop owned
by Hugh. He can do that kind of flattop in his sleep. If you want it that
short, thats how short he will cut it, and still leave a little style too
it even.". The shop is located on the corner of Sepulveda and Crensha and
it is appointments only.

Colorado
Louie's Barber Shop or Manor Barbers
Hwy 287 & Midway Blvd, Broomfield, CO 80020
Phone: (303) 466-7922
All three barbers are hispanic, very friendly, lots of old magazines and
sports talk fill the shop. No appointments, so you can expect to wait at
opening, after work and on Weekends. Closed Sunday and Monday. They will
do shaving on the sides and very short cuts. All the Broomfield athletes
come here, so they also do logo cuts and the like.
Downtown Barber Shop
30 East Willamette Avenue Colorado Springs, CO 80903
This is a great 60s era barber shop, located between Colorado College and
downtown Colorado Springs. Ron works here on Fridays and Saturdays (someone
else is there the rest of the week) and is probably the best "clipper over
comb" barber I've ever been clipped by. He listens, is conscientious and
gives a great cut. Flattops, crewcuts, basic tapers, Ceasars and all the
rest for around $9. Appointments and walk-ins.
Thanks to the reader who sent in details of this excellent
shop in the Pike's Peak region.
Update (Dec 31, '98):The
Downtown Barber Shop changed hands several months ago. If anyone
has any information about the current barber(s) there, please send it to
Buzztown.
Rico's Barber Shop
712 Cheyenne Meadows Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80906
Phone: (719) 540-0714
Hours: Monday-Friday 9-5:30 and Saturday 9-2
This is a great barbershop for short clipper cuts of all kinds. Walk-in,
first come/first serve. No appointments. The yellow pages advertise that
Rico's Barber Shop is "The Expert in Flattops." Four barbers. All do good
work. But I particularly recommend Ron for flattops. A barber named Art
is my second choice. Ron gives excellent flattops and high and tights.
It's disappointing that Colorado doesn't allow straight razors to shave
the back and sides of a great high and tight. Also, no neck shaves with
a razor or around the ears. It's still worth a trip. A regular haircut
is $8.00, flattops are $9.00, and (although I never got one) a wet cut/style
is $10.00. Many of the cadets from the Air Force Academy drive down to
Rico's to get their hair cut as well as a lot of the local law enforcement.

Shop Hours (Tues.-Fri. 8-5, Sat. 9-3)
"I just got home from getting a flattop and had to send in my recommendation
for this fine barber shop. The name of the shop is Don's Barbershop
and it is located in Boise, Idaho. Don't look for Don because he's
retired. His son Chip took over the shop and mans the first chair
as you walk in the door. I don't ever recall receiving a first time
flattop like the one I just got. It is perfect! When I got
to the shop there was a guy in the chair getting a crew cut. I almost
asked for one of those because it looked so good! I believe that
Chip will do anything you want including shaving the sides and back if
you so desire. He used a straight razor on me to do the outline."

Brenda Taggart and Bob Necker operate a traditional Barber Shop in Corvallis,
Montana, USA. You can visit their two chair shop on Main Street between
the Post Office and Marshall's Pharmacy in this small town in the western
part of the state (population 500-600 people and probably that many dogs
and cats!!) The clientele consists mostly of the locals, rancher/farmer
down-to-earth kind of people and the newly retired that have moved here
from metropolitan areas. (Mostly from California. Can't blame em can you!?!)
They do lots of short conservative type haircuts and their flattops are
the best around. They do any kind of men's haircut or style but "high-and-tight"
is in order for many of their clients on drill week-end. In their combined
43+ years of barbering they have done it all but still prefer the neat
short men's cuts. Short and crisp is the way they like to do 'em!! Good
Service at a Good Price. $8.00 for a regular haircut.
Walk-ins welcome anytime but appointments are recommended. Special appointments
early or late available. Bob or Brenda both excell in their work and either
will give you the best flattop or short cut you've ever gotten. Straight
razor neck shaves with hot lather and authentic apothecary mixed Bay Rum
aftershave lotion provide a finishing touch. While you wait you can look
over the antique toy collection that fills to overflowing the back room
or cruise the Internet on the 'puter that has a wazoo sound set-up with
way cool Harley motorcycle and other sounds. Ask Bob for the latest Hot
Site.
They operated barber/styling salons in a city near here together for
19 years. They sold their shop there and remodeled and moved into what
had traditionally been the local barber shop 3 years ago. They say they
can walk to work and go home for lunch. Much better than fighting the traffic
and having a bad attitude before even getting to work.
You can also visit Trimmin's
website to learn more about this interesting shop.
Thanks to Bob and Brenda for sending in details of
their shop.
Nevada
C W's Hair Co
1539 S Virginia St, Reno, NV 89502
Phone: (702) 329-1410
This is a recommendation that was posted by "Gary S." on Hairnet Hotline,
in response to someone who was looking for a good flattop barber in Reno.
Here is what Gary S. said.
Two out of three of the barbers are the State Board of Nevada that
do all inspections and licensing for the state. You should call first for
an appintment. They are masters with the clippers and scissors. They are
in a plaza at the back next to a health club.
The guy who posted the original question, posted a follow-up saying that
he went to this barber shop and was happy with the results.
Bud's Barber Shop
3024 Kietzke Ln, Reno, NV 89502 (NE Corner of Kitzke &
Gentry Reno, NV)
Phone: (702) 825-1582
This is a shop of three barbers. The lady refers flattops to the men and
Don took the time to do a good job on my short flattop. The price was $11
in August 97. I will use them again the next time in Reno.
Scissors & Comb Barber & Beauty Shop
233 S. Sierra, Reno, NV 89502
Phone: (702) 786-0306
I highly recommend going to this barber shop. You can walk in or make an
appointment - they do men, women and children. They are located downtown
Reno short ways from the Flamingo Hilton Hotel & Casino. They are board
certified from Nevada. This shop does flattops, crewcuts, any kind of hairstyle
that you can think of. The barbers are John & Shelly and they are very
good.
Thanks to Michael for this recommendation.
New Mexico
Juan Rey's Barber Salon
1902 Lakeview SW (off of Isleta Blvd.) Albuquerque, NM 87105
Phone: (505) 873-7551
Juan Rey is one of the best barbers in the Southwest.... The lines were
tremendous when he worked at his Dad's barbershop. I waited 3 hours once.
The fades, flattops, and crewcuts are all master pieces. They will razor
the sides and back with HOT lather and a straight edge. His dad is still
in business at Isleta Barber Salon. (Both barber shops are on Isleta Blvd.,
in the South Valley. Take Rio Bravo exit off of I-25. Go west until Isleta.
Make left to go to Juan Rey's. It's about 1/2 mile down on the right. Make
a right to go to Isleta Barber Salon. It's also a half mile down on the
right.)

Gus's Barber Shop
624 Baca Street Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501
Phone: (505) 982-9006
Ask for David.... Gus does good cuts, but David (who is Gus's son) does
the best fade, flattop, horseshoe, or crewcut in Northern New Mexico. David
is also attending school at the community college. Call to see if he is
at the shop.

Washington (state)
The Sportsmans Den Barber & Style Shop
402 E. Fairhaven Ave Burlington, WA 98233
Phone: (360) 755-0963
This shop is a real gem of an old time barbershop. The flattops and clipper
haircuts are superb! The owner has been in this location for 23 years.
He has been cutting hair for 35 years. There are four barbers here (two
males and two females). Bob, the owner, has taken the time and effort to
share his thirty-five years of experience with the other barbers. The flattops
and military style cuts are outstanding in any of the chairs. Longer styles
and womens cuts are also featured. If you are ever in Northwest Washington
be sure to stop here!
The Male Image
12225 12th Ave NE Kirkland, WA 98034
Phone: (425) 823-1181
I just got a great short taper at "The Male Image" located at the
Totem Lake Fred Meyers complex in Kirkland, WA. I've been going to this
place for a few months and I've always received consistently good results,
even with different barbers. They are real quick and they give you a neck
massage afterwards (!! worth every penny of the $15 price !!). Recommended
for anyone wanting a good short haircut in the Eastside suburbs of Seattle.
Although I did not get a buzz cut or a flattop, I'm sure this shop would
be worth checking out if you prefer this style. Atmosphere is typical suburban
strip-mall clean, but not so bad as to be "sterile" - it does have some
character.
Olympic View Barber Shop
412 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles, WA 98362
Phone: (360) 457-9503
This shop was recommended by a reader as a good place to get a flattop.
He says that the barber to go to is the heavy set barber named Charlie.
"He does them right every time." The reader also warns you not to go to
the skinny barber at this shop for a flattop.
Clean Cut Barber Shop
221 James Street, Seattle, WA 98104
Phone: (206) 340-1885
This is another listing supplied by Ty. He had an extraordinarily good
high-and-tight at this barber shop. Ty suggests that you try to get the
shop's owner, Mike Stapleton. "He looks like Howie Long and is a real cool
guy to talk with while he trims you up. I also watched him do a flattop
well, but I'm not sure if he will whitewall with a razor and lather since
I didn't want that at the time. But he is definitely great with high-and-tights."
