Alabama
Pepper and Slicks Barber Shop
Anniston, AL
Pepper and Sicks Barber Shop is at the Marine MP training base in Anniston,
Alabama. I'm not sure of the address but off I20 it is just north of Anniston.
This shop specializes in high and tights.
Greens Barbershop
6121 McClellan Blvd, Anniston, AL 36206
Phone: (205)820-8501
Thanks to the reader who sent this and other Alabama and Georgia shop recommendations.
The reader says that this is another shop that specializes in High and
Tights and you may see many of them cut while waiting. Haircuts are $5.00
and they use a razor and clippers always.

Florida
Deerfield Buzz
3708 W. Hilllsboro Blvd., Deerfield Beach, FL 33442
Phone: (954) 698-6367
A strong recommendation from SteveP on the Hairnet Hotline. He says "Other
than the Astor Barbershop in NYC the bestplace to get crewcuts, flattops,
Ivy leagues and H&T's is the Deerfield Buzz in Deerfield Beach Florida.
They charge $8 and people come from all over the country to get their haircut
there. If you don't know what short cut would look best on you they will
tell you and they are always right. The storefront is covered with before
and after pictures. It is a truly unique shop. As the saying goes 'If you
don't look good, they don't look good'."
Since the original information about this shop was posted, there have
been several more recommendations for Deerfield Buzz on the Hairnet Hotline.
One reader wrote "I have a standard businessman's haircut, with typical
forty something thinning at the crown. I had them give me the same haircut,
I was the only one of 20 people in this shoppe of three barbers who wasn't
getting some sort of buzzcut).
The barber gave me my standard business haircut using only clippers
and I can honestly say it is the best looking haircut I have ever had.
Also, everybody's buzzcut that I saw while I was waiting looked perfect.
If you go on vacation or business to Southern Florida I strongly recommend
that you get a haircut at Deerfield Buzz in the Deerfield Mall in Deerfield
Beach (just south of Boca Raton.)"
Deerfield Buzz Update: The general
policy of the Buzztown Barber Shop is not to print negative comments about
a barber shop. However, given the amount of postive comments about Deerfield
Buzz, it is only fair to acknowledge that there have been some negative
comments about the shop posted on the Hairnet Hotline. The initial comments
were posted by TF (on March 17, 1997) and his specific grievance was that
his well-shaped, but grown out flattop was cut into a "tilted mess", the
barber wouldn't acknowledge that one side was higher than the other, TF
was not given a hand mirror to check the back of the cut afterwards and
that the cost of the cut was $14 (no tip was given). TF's posting resulted
in a number of responses, some agreeing with the criticism and others reporting
that they have always had great cuts there. Even with this criticism, one
Deerfield barber, Bobby, consistently gets good comments about his barbering
skills.
Update - Apr 2, 1998:
"Just want to add another "high praise" recommendation for Deerfield
Buzz. I went there three weeks ago while on business in Florida. Bobby
cut my hair (there are now three other Barbers - the new one being Bobby's
son, Bobby, Jr. The haircut was the best I've had in many, many years -
I was thinking about a flat top or long crew (have always wanted to try
it) but Bobby talked me into a slightly longer, push back style "English
cut" - # 2 up the neck and sides, just enough to lay back slightly on top.
It looks tremendous - as did every haircut I saw being given there. If
I lived nearby, I'd be a frequent regular - they know how to give a masculine,
no-nonsense haircut, but with style. My wife likes it a lot, and she's
a long hair fan. Cost was $14, but the price goes down to 10 on subsequent
visits. This place is without doubt the bossest barbershop I've ever visited.
They KNOW what they're doing, and they're not reluctant to tell you what
will look best. They deserve a place in the barbershop hall of fame - and
the shop name is the best. 'Nuff said."
Pete's
11520 S. Dixie Highway, Miami, FL 33156
According to one Hairnet contributor "You gotta go to Pete's. Lefty started
giving me Flats 8 years ago and I can't go a week without getting back.
He gives a real good lawn mower job. Real smooth and a real fun place to
go."
A-Classic Barber Shop
2345 East Michigan Street, Orlando, FL
Phone: (407) 898-4615
"My recent experience there was great, Jeff is the barber in town that
I would reccomend for a great flattop. Flattops are $10. and he will make
sure to get it cut just the way you want it with his Oster clippers. He
also uses a straight razor if you like. My only negative with the shop
is that the barbers smoke in between cuts in the shop, which is the first
time I have experienced smoking in a Florida shop. Great haircuts though."
Thanks to the reader who sent in details of this shop.
Lockhart Barbershop
7220 Edgewater Drive, Orlando, FL
Phone: (407) 290-2928
"This is a small old fashioned one man shop with a young barber named Joe
that gives excellent haircuts, taking his time with each customer. Joe
also uses straight razors. Upon completion he uses a massage machine on
you. Haircuts here are $8."
Steve's
Haircuts
3906 S MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL 33611
Phone: (813) 837-3900
A Buzztowner recommends Steve's Haircuts as a great barber in the Tampa
Bay Area. This shop offers straight razor shaves.
Update (Jun 20, '99):
Another customer of this shop recently sent in a recommendation for this
shop:
"I'd like for you to include a great
little barber that I found in Tampa Florida. It is a funky, old Key West
style shop that gives GREAT haircuts...and they're cheap." The owner
is Steve Deal, and Warren Keifer is a barber there.

Georgia
1375 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, GA 30309 (cnr. Peachtree
and 17th)
Phone: (404) 892-8449
Recently started shaving my head and found a great shop for head shaves
and shaved high and tights. The shop is located in the Midtown area of
Atlanta Georgia. It is a appointment shop but can be worth the effort.
The barber to ask for for the best head shave experience of a lifetime
is Bud. He is the only guy in the shop, there are two other barbers, both
women. Bud owns the shop. It is a full service shop. When I called to ask
about a head shave and asked if he could do one he said he can do anything
when it comes to hair. He does beard trims face shaves manicures and shoe
shines.
Big League Barbers
1068 Baxter Street, Athens, GA 30606
Phone: (706) 353-0777
Big League Barbers is a great shop not far from the campus of the University
of Georgia. As the title suggests, it's a sports-themed shop with tons
of memorabilia - especially Bulldogs stuff - all over the walls. In the
waiting area, a big screen TV broadcasts ESPN all the time, and there is
a small TV in front of each comfortable chair (you get to control the remote).
The barbers are young, yet they seem to have a good grasp of both traditional
and more contemporary cuts. Each haircut includes a free shampoo after
the cut (with a cool peppermint shampoo that makes your scalp tingle) and
a shoulder massage with an electric massager. You can even drop in between
haircuts for a complimentary trim around the ears and neck! You can make
an appointment or drop in and risk the wait, but Big League Barbers is
a terrific place for a great cut and great conversation.
Thanks to Buzztown reader Chris for this recommendation
Jeff's Barber Shop
Newnan Street, Carrollton, GA
"The owner is Jeff and is a former Marine. A high and tight is shaved clean
with the soap that runs down your head that he uses to wash your hair with
a soapy brush. He gave me a landing strip flattop with a "clean" strip.
The shop is located on Newnan St in downtown Carrollton."
Ranger Joe's Barbershop
4030 Victory Drive, Columbus, GA 31903
Phone: (706) 682-0423
Someone sent the details of this shop to me. They found it through the
Web yellow pages, so they haven't actually used their services. However,
it sounds interesting and it could well be a great shop. The location of
this shop is near Fort Benning, where the Army Rangers are trained. If
anyone has any details of this shop, please send them in.
Update: Another reader sent in details!
He says that this seven chair shop is very good. "Ask for a high and tight
and that is what you get. No long hair leaves this place."
Update: I have gone to Ranger Joe's
in Columbus, Georgia and was very pleased with a clean and smooth high
and tight flattop. The guys joked about me being bald the whole time they
cut it. It was a great experience.
Ranger Joe's Barbershop
835-A E.G.Miles Parkway, Hinesville, GA 31313
Phone: (912) 877-3044
Shop hours: 9am - 8pm; Sundays until 6pm.
A reader sent in details of a new Ranger Joe's shop in Georgia. He says
"Like the Ranger Joe's listed in Columbus, GA, the owner also opened one
in Hinesville, GA. It's a 7 chair shop and high-n-tights are the usual.
Get any of the barbers and you're sure to be pleased."
Reese's Barber Shop
1807 S. Lumpkin Rd, Columbus, GA 31903
Phone: (706) 689-9144
Thanks to the reader who sent in this review:
You will find five chairs in this shop. On any given day You may find
three women barbers that know what they are doing. Theresa is the manager,
and the best barber there. She works the last chair in the back. I went
in when they opened over two years ago. I had long hair past my shoulders.
I sat down in Theresa's chair and asked for something easy to take care
of. She said "Are you sure easy to take care of is what you want? This
is a military barber shop." I said yes. The next thing I know she was pushing
her clippers straght across the top of my head. Hair covered the floor
and the cape. Just what I had always wanted but was afraid to ask for,
a high and tight. I return once a week for this haircut. Check it out you
won't be sorry!
Forrest Mart Barber Shop,
6063 Fairburn Road Douglasville, GA 30134
Phone: (770) 942-6739
Details of this barber shop were sent by a Buzztown visitor.
"I found a Barber Shop in Douglasville, GA (suburb of Atlanta) that
does great short haircuts. The clientele seems to be either very old men
or younger guys in the military or police, or those into super-short buzz
cuts, high and tights and especially flattops. I've never been in a shop
where so many flattops are done. The barber in the middle chair does the
shortest flattops I've ever seen. No traces of hair on the back and sides,
and an almost clean landing strip. Lots of guys go here. There's almost
always a wait. Kind of an old-fashioned, blue-collar place."
Update: "I
did receive a nice flattop but when I asked that the barber shave the sides
and back clean, I was told that they didn't do that. However it was a short
on top as it could be and still be called a flattop."
Bob's Barber Shop
1318 Canton Hwy., Marietta, GA
Phone: (770) 427-9326
Bob's Barber Shop in Marietta, GA is a five chair
shop in a small building that has been open since 1964 (I believe).
There are about eight different barbers who rotate in and out, two of which
are women. They range from older to younger, but skill seems equal
across the board. I have used three different barbers here, and all
are excellent. I have never seen a bad cut leave this shop. Once
I was getting a flattop and saw five other flattops take place during the
course of my visit. Lots of cops go here and the Naval Air Station
and Air Force Base aren't too far away. They do a lot of military
cutting apparently because I see many H&T's walking out. Be prepared
to wait if you visit, they are always busy.

Kentucky
Fern Creek Barber Shop
6310 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40291
Phone: (502) 239-9236
Buzztown reader "CloseCropt" recommends
this barber shop. He says that the Fern Creek Barber Shop "is an excellent
place for a buzz. There are 4 barbers and all can give a good cut. Bill,
Cuz, and Ryan give the best flattops. There is usually a wait, but they
are quick, friendly, and reasonable. A haircut is only $6."
Well's Barber Shop
144 Big Hill Avenue Richmond KY 40475
Phone: (606) 623-3985
If you live in Richmond and are into short hair, you surely already know
about Wells. It's THE place in Richmond where frat boys, cops, ROTC guys,
jocks, and, well, just about anyone else gets their short haircuts. If
you're travelling down I-75 and in need of a haircut, this is a good place
to stop, Richmond is right off the highway.
Wells is a 5-chair shop with four older, seasoned barbers and a younger
guy, Vince. All are equally skilled, although some guys seem to prefer
to wait for the older guys (I've had excellent crewcuts from Vince, so
there is no reason to bypass him, in my opinion.)
On busy days, it's a take-a-number kind of place with the clippers literally
flying and piles of hair building up pretty fast on the floor. A lot of
guys come in for weekly shearings, but there's also a fair amount of guys
who go from long to short at Wells.
They do the full range of short haircuts, from regulation military buzzes
to trendy undercuts and bowlcuts for some of the high school kids. They
finish you off with hot lather and a straight razor, and the prices are
VERY reasonable.

Mississippi
Grubbs Barber & Style Shop
2595 W Main St, Tupelo, MS 38801
Phone: (601) 840-0073
Grubbs Barber Shop, Highway
6, Plantersville, Mississippi. Great place for a cut. Two chair shop with
frendly conversation. Haircuts range from $8 to $10 a cut. Great place
for a flattop, crewcut, hightight, layered cut or a shampoo. Drop in and
check it out.
North Carolina
Independence Barbershop
3901 Independence Blvd (US Hwy 74), Charlotte, NC
I'd like to recommend a barbershop in Charlotte, NC which I think is a
good shop. It is the Independence Barbershop at 3901 Independence
Blvd. (U.S. Hwy. 74),--I believe that it the correct address. It
used to be run by two brothers, however since the first time I was there
and my second visit a few years later, one brother passed away, and there
is another barber there. You can get a pretty good flattop there,
and the edges around the neck and ears are actually razor shaved.
The last visit I took there, I got a great high and tight, and it appears
that they are willing to razor shave the back and sides, but may not if
you might have ingrown hairs. Hours are 8 -5 Tuesday to Friday, closed
Mon. Weekends, I'm not sure about. Cost is $9.

Pentagon
Barbershop
6441 Yadkin Road, Fayetteville, NC 28303
Phone: (910) 487-0630
Shop hours: Open seven days - Mon.-Fri:8AM-8PM; Sat-Sun till 6PM
Went to the Pentagon Barbershop in Fayetteville, NC. I asked for a shaved
high and tight. The barber, an Asian woman, shaved it twice to make sure
it was smooth. It cost nine bucks. Best high and tight I have ever had.
Updated: Another Buzztowner doesn't
enjoy this shop as much. Read his comments; they may change you mind about
this shop, or you may think that it's exactly what you are looking for.
It is strictly a haircut factory, if you know what I mean. It is huge
-- about 10-15 chairs. And 95% are military, which is fine. It is in and
out of the chair in 5 minutes.
Updated: Thanks to Buzztown reader
Frank for sending in some more information about Pentagon Barbershop. Frank
asked a guy with a great short cut where he had it cut (a good way to find
a good barber). Frank commented that he had heard mixed reviews about this
shop. The guy replied "Well, you have to go to first chair on the right,
Mr. Grimm (?spelling). He's been cutting hair for 40 years. It's where
all the colonels and generals go.".
Update (Jun
20 '99):
" I just wanted to add my recommendation of a shop here in
Fayetteville NC that gives great short cuts. In particular I would
suggest the Pentagon Barber Shop on Yadkin Rd. There is a barber
there named Clarence who only works on Saturday and Sunday, but he gives
the best high & tight flattop I have ever had. He will even shave
the sides and back with a straight razor so that they are perfectly smooth.
Usually I notice that the other barbers get you in and out in about 10
minutes, but Clarence takes his time and really puts a good finished look
on your cut."
Huffman's Barber Shop
1728 Battleground Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27408
Phone: (910) 274-4879
Huffman's do primarily business cuts, but the barber closest to the window
(an older gentleman) is good with a flattop. Greensboro/Winston Salem is
a different market from Raleigh/Durham. Greensboro/Winston Salem is people
who work in banking, tobacco marketing (RJR), textiles and the guys tend
to have business cuts. You don't see many flattops there and even kids
have business cuts. Raleigh/Durham is a university area with researchers
and computer people thrown in. While there certainly are business cuts
here in the Raleigh/Durham area, there are LOTS of flattops, crewcuts,
shaved heads and also still lots of guys with very long hair (pony tails).
So an hour on the interstate can make a big difference.
Man Mur Barber Shop
2708 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27607
Phone: (919) 832-4140
Shop hours: Mon. thru Fri. 8-5:30; Sat. 6AM-1PM
Yes you read correctly. They open at 6:00AM on Saturdays! Thanks to to
the Buzztown Barber Shop contributor who provided a detailed review of
this popular barber shop in Raleigh, NC:
Price: $9.00 for all haircuts and they will do shaves with hot towels
($9.00).
Located across from North Carolina State Univ. When students are in
town this is a busy barber shop. Also heavy National Guard and law enforcement
clientelle. And then there are many regulars who have been coming since
childhood.
There are 5 barbers with Don and Richard being the older ones (age mid
30's to early 40's). Both do good flat tops. Two of the other barbers have
only been out of barber's school for a year or two. Floyd (yes, a Floyd,
as in Mayberry) has finally gotten the hang of the flat top and is good.
Leo is the other young barber, but I have never seen him cut a flat top.
Tony will not cut flat tops and will ask you to move to another chair.
All 5 barbers are good with crew cuts and buzz cuts. Short hair is the
norm at this barber shop.
If you want good short flat tops (high & tight or white walls) wait
until the weekend. That is when the "old guys" come in. Frank Turnipseed
(Fri. & Sat.) and Henry Pennington (Sat. & Mon.) do even better
flat tops. They've been cutting flat tops regularly since the early 1950's
and they still have steady hands and good eye sight (hey, it's important!)
while still knowing how a flat top is supposed to look. Mr. Pennington
is particularly good and likes to cut it short. The other advantages of
Mr. Turnipseed and Mr. Pennington is that they are tall. If you are tall,
as I am (6'4", 193 cm), one of my main concerns with any barber cutting
my flat top is that they be able to stand above my head when cutting without
me all slouched down in the chair.
Sedge Garden Barber Shop
4310 Kernersville Rd. between Kernersville and Winston-Salem
Phone: (910) 785-4600
Shop hours: Tues-Fri 9-5 Sat. 8-12
One man shop located in back of a tireshop but sign out front makes it
easy to find. Don, I hear is a retired Airforce barber. I was referred
to him by a policeman. The man took his time cutting my short regulation
style cut. He was constantly looking back into mirror or taking step back
to look at it direct making sure all looked right. He was very good at
working the clippers constantly changing blades for the perfect blend and
fade. He could have been a sculptor in a previous life. The man, Don Tatum,
was very polite and good conversationalist. I was very pleased and highly
recommend.
Thanks to Frank for providing this information.
Update: Frank, who sent in the original
details of this shop wrote back to say that the price of a haircut at Sedge
Garden Barber Shop is $8. Also the barber at this shop finishes the cut
with lather and razor around the edges

South Carolina
Ron's Barber Shop
Parris Island Gateway, Highway 280, Beaufort, SC 29902
Phone: (803) 525-0781
Shop hours: Monday thru Friday only
Ron has been in business for years. He's an ex-Marine, but not one of those
Macho "get in the chair and let me buzz you" kind of guys. Much more soft-spoken,
very nice, friendly, and genuinely appreciates your business. He gets the
business of more than half of the marines in town from both Parris Island,
the East Coast recruit depot (you want to see short?) and the Marine Corps
Air Station, where the guys' hair tends to be just a little bit longer.
He's that good, and he takes his time and gives you what you want. He's
pretty adept at all cuts, but in particular the short ones. Very good flattops,
h&t, and short tapers, but he's pretty good at businessman's cuts too.
His shop is located about 5 miles from Parris.Island. Most of his Parris
Island business is drill instructor's high and tights, plus the assortment
of flattops and high regulation haircuts, while the Air Station guys come
in for low regulation (not buzzed so high up the sides and back) and hair
left a little bit longer on top. Ron gets quite a bit of civilian business
too from all ages. He works with a younger barber, George, who's even more
soft spoken than Ron, and is pretty good at all styles, though many of
the Marines wait until Ron's chair is open. Sometimes Ron's daughter, Sabra,
works there. I don't recommend her unless it's a child's cut or senior
citizen. Ron charges $8 for civilians and less for military, with surcharge
for shaved sides/back, or beard trims. If you want an authentic Marine
haircut, and you want it to look good, you can't do much better than Ron.
If he weren't so good, his parking lot wouldn't always be so darned crowded.
It's worth the trip from anywhere. (Contributed by a Buzztown visitor.
Note: Parris Island is the East Coast Marine Recruit Depot. All Marine
recruits who live east of the Mississippi go here for boot camp.)
Update: Here's
an update from Steve, a regular Buzztown visitor who was vacationing near
Parris Island and decided to try one of the barbers listed on the Buzztown
Barber Shop. First he had to decide which of the barbers in this great
haircut region to choose:
After a lot of thought, I decided to go to Ron's
Barber Shop, a few miles from the Parris Island gate, and I was very pleased
with the results. As the listing says, Ron is a very nice guy, very accomodating.
He asked me to describe the style I wanted (high and tight flattop, leave
the length in front, keep it square, shave the sides and back.) I also
decided to get a facial shave, as it had been a long trip, and I just didn't
feel like shaving. Although I was faced away from the mirror the whole
time, Ron gave me the best haircut I've ever had. The shave (both the head
and the face,) was fantastic! Ron's razor went in about 14 different directions,
and the results were absolutely smooth! I walked out of the shop looking
exactly like I wanted to, and feeling great! I would not hesitate to recommend
this shop, and Ron especially, to anyone! My only regret is that I live
850 miles away, and may never be able to duplicate the experience again!
Update: Buzztown
reader Frank ran into a customer of this shop with a great short cut, who
commented that "you just can't find anyone better than Ron."
OK
Barbershop
Pendleton Street, West Greenville, SC
No phone
Shop hours: Mon thru Fri 7-5:30; Sat. 7-2
There is an excellent Barber Shop in Greenville, SC, in the "West-End."
The OK Barbershop has been in the same location (Pendleton Street, West
Greenville) since the 1950's. The shop is run by two brothers, "Mack" and
"Dude." They both give excellent flat tops although "Dude" isn't real keen
on "lathering it up." After a shave, they use honest-to-goodness Bay Rum.
If the shop is crowded, wait for "Dude's" chair to open up. "Mack" is
getting a little age on him and tends to rush a bit when there a lot of
customers. If you like to go early in the morning, go on Monday. "Mack"
works alone on Mondays and will sometimes be open as early as 6:30 AM.
He is very relaxed at this time and spends a lot of energy making sure
all the details of your cut are perfect. Although I've gone to shaving
my own head every morning, I still show up once a month, early on a Monday
morning, to let "Mack" slick 'er up for me. If your thinking of wearing
a flat top, this is the place to go. They both do great "first time" flat
tops. Check 'em out!

Update (Jun 20, '99):
Another reader tried the OK Barbershop, and thought that it was OK, but
not great. He wrote in a few months ago and provided these comments:
Last Friday, I visited the "OK Barbershop" in Greenville SC,
based on the recommendation here. I'm sorry to report that I was
not impressed. Dude cut my flattop. I asked for a zero all
around, up high (I indicated how high) and up over the crown, along with
a short landing strip. I also asked for the edges to be tapered extremely
close.
While it is a very even, precise flattop, Dude didn't taper the edges
at all, and didn't shave around the ears or neck. Also, I had to
ask to see the back, and then ask for it to be cut higher, up to the crown.
The haircut was only $8, and I certainly can't complain about the overall
quality, but I was expecting better.
Don's Barber and Styling
8780 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC
Phone: (803) 572-2495
Don's Barber and Styling is a traditional four chair shop in a strip mall.
Flattops are a specialty. Ask for Don; he's a real flattop expert. (Don
has Monday and Tuesdays off.) Kim also gives a good short flattop. Thanks
to the reader who contributed this information.
Al's Barber Shop
Parris Island Gateway, SC
Located just outside the Parris Island gate open every day 9a-7p closed
Wednesday. Al used to work on base buzzing the hair of new recruits. Not
much skill there. Al gets a lot of military business because of his hours:
he's open every day but Wednesday, and when there are Monday inspections,
Al's weekends are extremely busy. Al only does short cuts well and WILL
go shorter than expected if you're not going for a crewcut, flattop or
h&t. He basically knows two words: "short" and "long" and short, when
you use it, means very short! Because he used to be a barber at Parris
Island, you're as safe as safe can be if you're going short. If you like
your hair left longer, this is not the place to go unless you are there
to watch! You'll get to see (and experience) some great stuff. And Al is
QUICK! You'll be out of the chair within 15 minutes in most cases so once
you tell him what you want there's no turning back. (Note: the first time
I went in, I had a long businessman's cut, just over the collar and ears...and
even before I told him what I wanted, he had the clippers buzzin' off the
hair from my collar. I simply told him I wanted it a little bit shorter,
and I ended up with a short, squared off back [maybe 1/2" to 3/4"], a short
trim around the ears, and about 2" on top. And he did it in about 10 minutes!
But if you're going in for a short cut you'll be as satisfied as if you
went to the base barbershop ... it's the next best thing and it's right
outside the gate!) I think you'll agree, if you go, that Al really enjoys
cutting longer hair short! (Contributed by a Buzztown visitor. Note:
Parris Island is the East Coast Marine Recruit Depot. All Marine recruits
who live east of the Mississippi go here for boot camp.)

Tennessee
Shelly Ivey Barbershop
137 E. Central Ave. LaFollette, TN 37766
Phone: (423) 566-0668
Al from Bristol, Tennessee sent in this recommendation and also described
how he received his first crewcut at this shop. You can read how Al became
a Short Hair Convert in the Experiences
section of Buzztown. Here's what Al has to say about the Shelly Ivey Barbershop:
Woody, the owner of the shop and the only barber there, has given me
the best haircuts I have ever experienced (I don't know why it's called
the Shelly Ivey Barber Shop, I always meant to ask Woody about this.)
Each time I get a haircut from him, I realize how much more skilled
he is than the average short haircut barber. He takes his time, and does
what you want, but isn't afraid to make suggestions. He seems instead to
be interested in making each haircut, no matter what the length, the absolute
best it can be. He does a whole range of styles and lenghs but in my biased
opinion, the short cuts are the best.
He has the best flattop method I've ever experienced, and in the years
since my first buzzcut there, I've become something of an expert on the
subject. He has a way of cutting a flattop that somehow keeps it standing
straight and rigid, even if you don't continue to use the butch wax that
he applies.
Just thought I'd put in a plug for this out-of-the-way but excellent
shop. It's 40 minutes north of Knoxville, but definitely worth the trip
if you want an excellent short haircut.

"They specialize in fades, Caesar's, temple tapers and flattops. This is
a 4 chair shop with extreme versatility. This is the only shop I have seen
that cuts mult-racial styles with precision and excellence. The shop is
located 56 miles south of Washington, D.C. in a rural suburb of Virginia."
Dulles Park Barber Shop
1080 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 22070

A message posted by "Buzz" on the Hairnet Hotline recommended this shop
and a barber there - Norman - for great high and tight cuts. Also, someone
sent an email message to the Buzztown Barber Shop saying that he had been
to the Dulles Park Barber Shop once, five or six years ago. He said that
it was a eight-seater shop with a "take a number" system. The shop seemed
a bit impersonal, but he thought that it might not be so impersonal for
regulars. The buzzcuts there were good.

This is another shop mentioned in a Hairnet Hotline message posted by "Buzz".
Buzz says "They feature a hot lather shave of the sides and backs that
can't be beat."
Quantico Barber Shop
322 Potomac Avenue, Quantico, VA 22134
Phone: (703) 640-0500
This shop was listing on the Hairnet Hotline. According to the guy who
posted the message (Brian) "I decided to go to a barbershop in Quantico,
Virginia, that a friend had told me about. It is located just off the Marine
base. The barbershop specialized in military style haircuts. My friend
also told me to ask for Charlie at the Quantico barbershop. There are about
four or five military barber shops in a one block area!! I explained to
him what I wanted and he immediately went to work. I asked for a landing
strip but it ended up being a horseshoe when he finished. I am very happy
with the results!! It is very short and easy to manage. The responses at
work were pleasing. Several people wanted to rub my newly shaven head.
Charlie completed the cut with white walling the sides and the back with
shaving cream and the works!! It felt wonderful!! I plan to keep my hair
cut this way for a while now to experience all the benefits. " And what
did Brian have to pay for this wonderful experience? $6.50! Now that's
a bargain!
