Mohawk - Some Interesting Variations

There have been several requests recently from readers for some photos of mohawks. This is one that was sent to Buzztown some time ago by a reader. The photo was taken in France in 1945.

The mohawks in this photo are interesting, because there is such a variety of mohawk styles shown here. If you thought that the only two decisions to make with a mohawk were the width of the strip, and the length of the hair in the center strip, well this photo shows two more dimensions.

Firstly, the strip of hair can either go down the back of the head, or it can be a high and tight mohawk (that's probably a brand new term), in which the back of the head has no hair.

Secondly, the angle of the mohawk is the really interesting thing in these photos. Many of these mohawks are wedge-shaped. The mohawk strip could get narrower or wider further back on the head.

So if a regularly mohawk has become a little too boring for you, you now have a couple of options: a high and tight mohawk, or a wedge mohawk.

Update:

Thanks to the two readers who provided more information about this photo. The photo was taken in France on March 23, 1945. The photo shows U.S. paratroopers being briefed before their mission to cross over the Rhine the following day. The mohawk cuts were "for luck and espirit de corps" for the mission.

This information comes from a book titled "Haircults" (London, Thames and Hudson, 1990, ISBN 0-500-27568-8), which describes the photo as the earliest photograph of the mohawk style being used by people other than the Indian tribes themselves. The photograph is credited to Robert Capa - Magnum.
