These photos show a parallel ridge being cut. The ridge is then faded (cut as a sharp taper), to give a better finish to the cut.
A straight line is cut around the back of the head approximately 1/2 inch above the ear. This ridge can be left for the finished haircut, but most often is faded out with a tight taper (as will be shown below).
Here we see a close-up of the side with the straight edge/ridge cut around the head at the same height. This view is just before the fading.
Here the bare blade of the clipper is used in a rocking motion to give a tight tapered look.
In this finished side view we see the faded area wrap completely around the head at the same height.
