Sea Otter

Enhydra Lutris

The otter, known as Enhydra Lutris, is a fun and lovable creature. It is an animal well suited to its surroundings and is quite amazing. It is well built in upper body strength, in comparison to other otters. Its coat is supposed to be quite thick, but soft. The sea otter aquires sexual maturity at three years of age. When they do get to that age, and for the rest of their adult life, they usually have one offspring. The offspring stays with the mother for quite awhile like us humans, well....not THAT long. Well, its diet consists of mollusks and crabs.
The sea otter once inhabited the Pacific coasts, from Baja California to the islands of Indonesia, but now the numbers are far smaller than the numbers that lived in the ocean before, because of hunting, in the beginning of this century, by fur traders.

INTERESTING FAQs:The Sea Otter uses a rock placed on his chest as something to break open shells of crabs, clams, and sea urchins. Otters in fresh water, sometimes play in the snow, but use their own bodys as somewhat like sleds. Though don't you dare try any thing like that.
