‘Look, I’m very impressed with what I’ve heard and what I’ve found out about your achievements back in LA, and am very interested in teaching you or helping you, but I need to hear you in person before I can really assess anything.’
‘Oh! That’s fine! I am really grateful to you for even considering me!’
We talked for a little while longer and I arranged for her to come over for dinner next Thursday.
‘Oh, would it be alright if I brought my son along? He sings as well and when he heard your tape he was very impressed! He wanted to meet you.’
‘That should be fine, I’ll just check with mom.’
Mom raised her eyebrows.
I greased her.
It was all organized and we said good-bye.
I couldn’t wait for next Thursday!
The next week at school flew by, I became good friends with Sarah, Kate, Louise and all their friends and we began work on the episode where I come into ‘Secrets and Lies.’
But by far, the best day was Thursday.
THE Thursday.
I got home from Sarah’s house (where I’d been studying and checking out her new next door neighbor) at about five and had a shower.
Diana and her son, who she’d forgotten to name, were coming at seven.
I was afraid I would burst before then.
I was ready for anything, (well except what actually happened!) at six-thirty and was sitting impatiently on the sofa.
‘Why don’t you practice or something?’ Mom asked me.
‘I don’t want to strain my voice before she even hears me sing!’ I cried.
Mom just shook her head.
At about quarter to seven I couldn’t take it anymore and flew up to my bedroom to put Hanson on.
I was sitting on my bed, listening to ‘I will come to you’ and dreaming of Hanson when I saw a car pull into the drive.
I didn’t recognize the driver so I knew it would be Diana.
I flew down the stairs to open the door.
I waited a few moments after the doorbell rang before I answered to avoid looking over enthusiastic.
I opened the door.
A tall woman with long, long hair greeted me.
(Even that didn’t make me twig)
‘Hi! You must be Diana. Come in!’
‘Hi! Peta! Yes, I saw a picture of you the other day. You are as pretty in person!’
I blushed.
Mom came and greeted her also.
‘Oh, my son is out at the car getting his keyboard. I suggested he bring it over.’ She motioned to the door.
‘He might need some help.’ She smiled to show she wasn’t being rude.
